Dead Beat cover art is in!
Posted by iago at November 10, 2004 12:17 AM

We've got Dead Beat cover art!

You can also get a 1024x768 Wallpaper of the cover. This is a change of artist and the first time we've seen Harry on the cover!

EDIT: Several folks have asked about the cover's art and design. The artist is Chris McGrath. The designer is Ray Lundgren.

I too am new to these books, but will buy all of them without even flipping through them first. Not many authors get my attention like Jim Butcher. Thanks, can't wait to read more about Harry, the cat and the pup and all of his strange "friends".

excellent cover . it's just how we all must have
pictured Harry. sexy slightly dangerous look
cant wait for book 7. Also great job on the new
codex alera.

I have to say that the only thing that I don't like about this cover is that it gives me that so-close-yet-so-far-away feeling as to the release of book 7

Posted by: harryfan at December 2, 2004 10:58 PM

Yes! The cover art for book 7 is totally how I picture Harry! The hat is a great touch. I always felt if Harry could afford is his wardrobe would be a little "detective noir" and the hat fits perfect. Oh, and yes, it was his left hand that was burned. thats where he puts the shield braclet.

Posted by: Anton at November 28, 2004 05:29 AM

Is it just me, or does Harry kind of look like a modern, grunge-rock version of Van Helsing in that pic? ;)

YAY FOR JIM! It's great to see you FINALLY get the recognition you deserve.

Wow... the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, Episode III, AND a new Dresden book all in the same month?! May 2005 is going to be a Sci-Fi/Fantasy paradise.

As to the hand: It was Harry's left hand that was damaged (wasn't it?) in book 6. The hand holding his staff in the picture is his right. By my reckoning, the space-time continuum of the Dresdenverse seems to be holding up just fine.

Posted by: TheKindaNaughty at November 27, 2004 09:45 PM

Wow!! the cover is great!! you absolutely must keep this artist for future books- he has portrayed Harry true to form!! although yes, i also thought he had suffered damage to his hand during book 6? it doesnt matter... i anxiously await book 7. I have been reading fantasy/ science fiction since i was 9 years old ( i am 28 now) and i think you rank up there with some of the best authors ive ever had the pleasure to read. Great series!!

Posted by: Tami at November 21, 2004 11:23 PM

Looks great, can't wait to read it.
picturing in my mind, a wizard, a vampire, Bob, the cat and the new puppy, trying to survive in Harry's apartment

Posted by: Jordan at November 20, 2004 10:44 PM

I just finished reading the entire series and I'm a huge fan. I find this website and this new art...awesome. I like the glowing runes on the staff. I cannot wait for the next book to come out. It's been a while since I've read anything this witty and engrossing.

Posted by: Mike at November 17, 2004 12:32 AM

Wow! I mean, you have this image of a character and it's like, kinda blurred and you can't really make it out in your head, and then you see something like this and you're like, "yeah. That's him. That's him alright." It's so awesome, it's got all of the darkness of Dresden and at the same time, you just KNOW he's one of the good guys. It's like, wow! I just know this guy is gonna save the world or something!

P.S. I had NO idea that there were this many other fans of the Dresden Files! My People!!!

Posted by: Lunae at November 15, 2004 05:41 PM

I like it. Impressive how y'all managed to switch artists without a significant digression from the overall look of the previous books. You could line all seven up in a row and the new book wouldn't stand out in any negative way.

Posted by: Matthew Corsey at November 13, 2004 02:06 PM

Oy, I love, love, LOOOOOVE it!!! The shirt is great ... I can almost picture the baggy sweatpants and the cowboy boots! :)
My, Harry on the cover *fan girl squeal*!

Posted by: Miki at November 13, 2004 12:29 PM

Oh, I love it, itīs better than pizza!
Super duper double dog promise spit swear! :)

Posted by: Pia at November 13, 2004 12:09 PM

Hey!

Cool cover.. But it is raising questions about Harry's hand after the last book.

Posted by: Tomas at November 13, 2004 04:55 AM

gorgeous! i downloaded the desktop and have it displayed at work :)

Posted by: laura at November 11, 2004 06:21 PM

Keep this artist if you have any sway over that! Much better than the previous six books!!

Posted by: nathan at November 11, 2004 11:13 AM

Excellently cool. I am looking forward to the book.

To answer Josh's question, the characters transliterate as matorikksu. I believe (and my electronic dictionary concurs) that is an adaptation of the word "matrix". Take that how you will... And note that the "matrix characters" in the Matrix movies are just backwards Japanese characters.

Very interesting... or shall I say, "Totemo omoshiroi."

Beautiful artwork, and I love being able to save it as wallpaper. Many thanks! Input, please, fellow fans: my mental image of Harry has always been w/ longer hair and kind of rugged, maybe in keeping w/ the life he's led. I'd love to hear other fans' images!

Posted by: Catriona413 at November 10, 2004 11:17 PM

Harry already has a hat in the books. He just doesn't wear it all the time.

Posted by: Fred Hicks at November 10, 2004 08:06 PM

Laimelady, I couldn't agree *more*! (g)

Posted by: Verushka at November 10, 2004 08:00 PM

Very cool cover. One wonders if Harry's going to ad a hat to his ensemble in the book or if this is just artistic liscense.

Posted by: Kalshane at November 10, 2004 07:59 PM

This cover rocks! I love how Harry's t-shirt is beat up and stretched out at the neckline... very true to the character. Really good work!!!

Posted by: Tonya at November 10, 2004 07:15 PM

Come on, people. *Jim* does not make you "wait so long" between books. That's the publisher. :)

Posted by: Fred Hicks at November 10, 2004 06:13 PM

Love the art work, still can't believe that you make us wait so long between books.

Posted by: Pat at November 10, 2004 06:12 PM

OOOOOOOOMG!!! If this isn't James Marsters as Harry Dresden, I'll... I'll... eat that hat!
Stunning!
Scary!
SEXy

Posted by: laimelady at November 10, 2004 05:05 PM

I REALLY LOVE THIS COVER! When I first saw it I was like, "...wow." Like the soft, reverent sigh of someone looking upon the face of a god or goddess. But not quite. But still that's REALLY GOOD! Bwahaha.

Sorry if I scare you, but this just really made me really happy.

Oh Baby!!!! *EG*

I liked the other artist's covers as well but this is really refreshing! And it Dresden!!! And I love the detail of the cover and use of colors - sets the mood. XD

Awesome. Must read.

Posted by: Keri at November 10, 2004 02:26 PM

Does anyone know what the runes on Harry staff say? It's Japanese katakana and seems to say 'Matoreetskusu.'

Posted by: Josh at November 10, 2004 02:05 PM

Very cool!! I can't wait!! Keep up the great work. I had started out on the audiobooks however they are a little too slow in coming out, to keep my curiosity from driving me crazy. I just purchased every single book that I could get my hands on!! I will continue to purchase the audiobooks because I absolutely adore James Marsters, but I will keep pace with the books as well. Wonderful stories!!
Thanks Jim.

Too KEWL! I've always thought that Harry looked like this!

Posted by: Cathy at November 10, 2004 10:45 AM

Jim is going to bankrupt me! :) Way to go, Jim! :)

Posted by: mony at November 10, 2004 08:33 AM

That is a totally awesome cover. Love the detail. (Is that "Fashion Crime" or "Fashion Chimp" in the background?)

Posted by: fuzz at November 10, 2004 08:31 AM

Hawt.

Posted by: Karrin at November 10, 2004 06:48 AM

Looks awesome.
Can't wait for the new novel to come out *paces room*

Posted by: Sway at November 10, 2004 06:34 AM

This is so cool. You always have a picture in your mind as to what Harry looks like. WOW..this really adds more to it. I can't wait until this books is released. Hate having to wait so long. The Dresden series is fantastic!!!

Posted by: Lori Beth at November 10, 2004 05:14 AM

Totally Cool as they use to say. Now when does it come out.

Posted by: NightHawk at November 10, 2004 01:29 AM

That is a *completely* awesome cover. Raar!

Posted by: Catie at November 10, 2004 01:26 AM

Mmm.... Me like Harry on cover... yum...

Posted by: Corrine Hopwood at November 10, 2004 01:06 AM

Hm, in my excitement, I forgot to read the blurb at the end of the picture - so yeah, I guess it is the first time Harry's been on the cover (g) I can't *wait* for May!

Posted by: Verushka at November 10, 2004 12:46 AM

Is this the first time Harry's been on the cover? After reading the end in the last book (see no spoilers!) I'm getting a distinctly Darth Vader-ish feeling here. It's kinda cool! Definately an image to hold on to until it's published!

Posted by: Verushka at November 10, 2004 12:29 AM

Ooooh! Thank you -- great cover art. And it's coming out in May! *squeak*

Congratulations, Mr. Butcher: your Harry Dresden series makes you one of the few authors whose books I will automatically buy without flipping through them first to assure myself of the quality.
