Dead Beat's first run sells dry
Posted by iago at May 8, 2005 02:40 AM
Word from Jim: "Just thought I'd let you guys know that the first run of Dead Beat sold dry in three days. They're sending the book back to the press for another run, which is fairly unusual for hardbacks, according to my editor. Neat stuff!" Later: "15k on the first run. New copies can come out anywhere from a week to a month later. Note that there are still copies available, but they're all in the pipeline from distributors to stores, and the orders to restock ate up the tiny surplus copies. If they handle it right, there shouldn't be a problem with actually acquiring the book from the bookstore-customer standpoint." CommentsHey Books A Million in OKC had a girl who recommended the Dreseden novels to me after she saw me lurking around the Laurell K stuff. I bought the first and read 4 more in a month now Im starting Blood Rites. Awesome!!! Thanks for the lunch breaks and late nights filled with a new wizard on the block. You should give kickbacks to Waldenbooks. A lady working there suggested Storm Front to me. Posted by: Jason at August 9, 2005 04:28 PMI love the Dresden series. I saw "Furies of Calderon" at the local library and enjoyed reading it. Not on my tops list, but it was worth reading. I thought I'd check out more from the author, and saw "Dead Beat" on the racks, and... read all of last night to finish it. Wooooooooooooooohooooooooooooooo! Thanks, Jim, for such an excellent read. Look forward with great anticipation to inhaling the earlier Dresden books. Posted by: Dov at July 22, 2005 10:29 AMi think dead beat was really funny because of butters i never forgot POLKA WILL NEVER DIE!!! lol and bob was so COOL plus the wardens i was so shocked to hear what the red court did i have a feeling that the next book will be mostly about the fight between the white council and harry and the white council and the red court i can't say how happy your making my mom she just loves your books and so do i i don't really like to read unless it's about magic manga or fantasy books like dragons and stuff but this is really good keep writing please i'll be waiting for your next book Posted by: sayo at July 13, 2005 10:26 PMI got into Harry Dresden for something to do while waiting the last six weeks for Harry Potter HBP to hit the stores. Dresden 1-7 only took 3 1/2 weeks to read and I am really ticked I am out of the books and have nothing else interesting to read. Everything else I pick up just isn’t good enough! Brilliant, sir...stunning descriptions and gut-busting Snarkyness that Joss Whedon himself would be proud of! I just finished Dead Beat (took me under 2 days, literally couldn't pull my nose out of it - even at work!) When i first saw Storm Front, i was like "this looks kinda sketchy..", but its a bad ass series and i literaly read all of them in under 5 days, it was great. Can't wait for next one, i wanna see what happens 'tween murphy and harry(cuz i felt a connection before that pr*ck kincaid asked her to travel with him), how harry handles his fallen angel(lol, i wanna see some crazy as* sh*t goin down:)),harry pimp-smacking that black court vampire bi*ch, and harry beating the crap out of kinkaid, ya know, just for sh*ts and giggles. Its gonna be crazy, can't wait, peace out. What a fun read this was! Zombie Sue...brilliant! Harry as a warden...fabulous! I liked how so many characters made an appearance. I really missed Murphy though. This needs to be on TV! I'll add my voice in hoping that the SciFi deal happens soon. Keep up the great writing J.B! Posted by: Marisa at June 25, 2005 03:35 AMDead Beat was a real disappointment, because it was over far too quickly! The Dresden Files were the books that enticed me into reading after 30+ years on the planet. It has been a while and I am still looking for books to fill the time while waiting for a new Dresden book. Every thing that I read is compared to Dresden and nothing is measuring up. Jim, I would not want Harry or his world to be compromised due to a “rush to produce” but boy do I wish there wasn’t so much time between books. If anyone has any suggestions for books for me to check out please share, no LKH…I have already read, been hooked, and then gave up on her stuff. Posted by: Tyronza at June 19, 2005 06:44 PMI haven't finished Dead Beat yet, too busy with the new house but anyways, where I am has been awesome. Not that I should be shocked by the past 6 books. Truly an awesome and extremely talented man Jim is. And the way he writes Harry, I've found myself saying stuff along the lines of Hell's Bells on more than one occassion. Keep up the outrageously great work!!! Posted by: Tiara at June 16, 2005 06:47 PMThanks for another great book, and a great serie. Abit late on my comment since i read it about 1 month ago or so. Was lucky to find it on a online bookstore i usually buy my books at so had no trouble getting a copy of it. Only bad thing is that they didn't have a paperback so now my collection is looking kinda odd with 1 hard back and the rest small papaerbacks :) Thanx to rommie for making me read this serie. It's a rare thing to find new good books these days :( Hoping to see more of Thomas in the next book. He is a fun character, could have done more in this book but... it's all good! keep em coming Mr. Butcher. Posted by: Samuel Kullander at June 16, 2005 09:11 AMFinally, Morgan returns. I'm a bit late in posting on it, but wow. Book read like a dream, and the twists were fantastical. Keep up the beautiful work. Posted by: Rachel Bickley at June 13, 2005 11:04 PMJim, just gotta let you know that it takes a lot to do what you do and we all appreciate it. As for a movie in which i think we should do i have some great ideas to start a screen play on 'Storm Front'. Screw the sci fi channel, blow potter out of his 4th grade robes and put Dresden on the big screen. A friend of mine (who I conviently lured into Jim Butcher fandom a few months ago) and I were anxiously awaiting the release. I knew what the official date was, but we decided to see if our local store was one of the few shelving the books before that date. Lucky us...they were! Great read, Jim. Butters joins the list of my favorites, as does Ramirez. Posted by: Meg at June 12, 2005 09:24 PMI ran into this book purely by chance. Something about the cover of Deadbeat drew me in. There is always that moment of magic about books that draw me in like this. I read that first novel, the 7th in the series, thinking it was the first, but still loved it. I got back and bought all the paperbacks, and now am coming up for breath with book 6. Posted by: David at June 10, 2005 06:05 PMI read Dead Beat in about a day and truly enjoyed it. I got my boss and my younger brother hooked on them. Two more to the dark side; yay me. Did Kincaid give Murph the bruises and broken wrist, and if so, will the next book involve Harry turning Kincaid into a fine paste? One thing confused me: Harry ordered Bob to forget about the heap big bad magic stuff and never to bring it up again. Why did Bob spill the beans? Keep us posted on the SciFi developments. :) Oh, and could you change your poll? Pretty please? It's been up since Blood Rites came out. Posted by: Jenni at June 9, 2005 12:59 AMI read Dead Beat a few weeks ago and it was great! I loved how Thomas explained to Harry just how bad it is for him. Poor Thomas. I was surprised about Bob having a bad side. Who knew our favorite spirit was such a bad ass!? Butters rocks! Can we keep him, Jim? Posted by: Carol Riedel at June 4, 2005 03:58 PMFinished Deadt beat in record time...and it was a great read..Loved the Necro T-rex very original I love the way Harry runs in the grey areas of magical "rules" One minor issue though when the Necros and zomibes where about to take over the house Harry leaves two really important things behind...Shiro's sword...imagine what the necro would do if he go hold of that, and MISTER....you would think Harry would have remembered to grab his CAT on the way out as well! I mean I know Mister can take care of Himself but still....that was alot of zombies! Nelson Rodriguez Had to let you know I have lured another to the 'Butcher' side. I gave a copy of Storm Front to my co-worker who is a HUGE Scifi-Fantasy-Horror fan. This guy spends hundreds of dollars every month ordering these books on the internet. He knows good stuff when he reads it. He told me he started reading it yesterday afternoon and told me to bring the next one in for him tomorrow because he will be done by tonight! Go Jim!! Posted by: Letitia L at May 31, 2005 10:46 AMThis book is great!! I had it preordered so got my copy on the day it came out but I confess to putting off reading it but only because I didnt want to have to wait a year for the next book, but I couldnt do it I just had to read it. It took me 1 day to read it, it was so good. Was a little gutted there wasnt more of Jonhny Marcone I love when him and Harry team up! Dead Beat is another spectacular instalment! Thank you Jim, for hours of entertainment. I am hooked on the lives and experiences of Harry, and his friends. But I must say, Karrin and Kincaid? ARRRGH! Nooooo! Other than that, loved this, and I can't wait for the next one. Posted by: Jason S at May 31, 2005 05:18 AMJust finished Dead Beat and all I can say its brillant and well worth the few extra days it took to reach British shores! Harry D. rocks:) Posted by: Susan at May 30, 2005 02:44 PMA paperback version would be most appreciated, otherwise it's off to the Library I go. Posted by: Frank at May 29, 2005 02:01 PMI work at a bookstore and I think now everyone but one person who works there has read or is reading the Dresden Files! Needless to say we recomend the books to a lot of people. Dead Beat was great, the best yet in my opinion. Keep up the writing and we will all keep up the reading and recomending! Posted by: Diana at May 27, 2005 12:39 AMI love the Dresden Files, except I live in Guam at the moment, and haven't been able to find "Dead Beat" anywhere. Not even on the Navy Base that is here. I also really enjoyed the new series....can't wait for "Academ's Furey" to come out. I'm not much of a reader, so it says alot. When I read anything from Jim Butcher, I can't put the book down. Can't wait to read Dead Beat when I can find it. Posted by: Rebecca at May 26, 2005 06:27 PMReally enjoyed this book Jim. Admittedly there were parts that slowed the pace down a bit, overall it is another great book in a great series! I started out as many, buying the audio cd of Storm Front to listen to James Marsters. After listening to Fool Moon, I couldn't wait anymore to find out what happens and bought the remaining books in the series. I read 4 books in 6 days! These are characters that really take hold and force you to care about (After Dead Beat I was so ticked off at Harry and Murphy's continued denial I started cleaning out my closet to calm my temper). Great work Jim and good luck with the SciFi deal! Posted by: Letitia L at May 26, 2005 02:56 PMWay to go Jim. It's an excellent book and even though I'm only on Chapter 12 it's fast becoming a favorite. I know fans that missed the first run and were shut out and are now waiting for the second run. Tell the publishers to hurry. Posted by: Lenore at May 26, 2005 01:14 PMI picked up this series on a whim and a prayer. Am I ever glad I took the chance! I enjoyed the series so much I'm making my husband read them. It's really funny to hear him laugh out loud at the same parts I did. Now we use "Harry-isms" for everything....computer not working? There must be a wizard around! Thanks, Jim, for putting the time and effort into creating an original and entertaining series. You are a true artist! Posted by: Mel S at May 25, 2005 09:55 PMI loved this book(Loved all the other Dresden Files books too.), favorite thing was zombie dinosaur. I can't wait for the next book/ Posted by: Raistlin Majere at May 25, 2005 07:30 PMGreat read, but of course I wasn't expecting anything less than that. This new book had me chuckling once again, and that's what keeps bringing me back again and again. Posted by: Mike S at May 25, 2005 12:57 AMLOVED...LOVED Deadbeat!!! Do I HAVE to wait a year for the next one??? Would love to see what would happen if Murphy met Bob!!?? Can't wait for the next Dresden! Posted by: Trudy D at May 23, 2005 10:30 PMFirst off I do love these books and have got many others to read and love them too. But instead of just saying that Dead Beat was awesome like the trend appears to be I would like to say that I didn't like it as well as others in the series. I felt like a lot of it was recapped and characters appeared just for the sake of appearing. I also felt that the story lagged in many spots. This is not to say that there weren't some really good parts. I truly enjoyed Harry becoming a warden and his dealings with Lasciel, and when he dealt with Mavra at the end I actually cheered. More Mouse and Michael, less Thomas. Keep writing and I'll keep reading and recommending to others. thanks. Posted by: mike at May 21, 2005 06:10 PMI read Dead Beat in 1 night ( after I`ve heard Grave Pewril and rfe4-read every other dresden book. actually they are getting better and better and I really can`t wait for the next ones (books and audiobooks). I just picked this up today. Had to go to 3 bookstores to find it. Posted by: John at May 20, 2005 04:04 PMSooo glad I preordered this! I'm overseas atm and the base bookstore doesn't even carry your books! (I harrassed some poor sales woman for 15 minutes about it till my husband dragged me away apologizing) This installment was great and I've been spreading the word to all my bookish (and nonbookish) friends and family. Even got my "I only read nonfiction" father to read it since he's from Chicago. I think he'll be getting his own copies soon! Can't wait for more installments! Posted by: Sarah at May 19, 2005 04:05 AMWow Jim, these are great books. It is a wonderful feeling after 23 years to finally have a favorite author. I love these books! I was in Las Vegas for a bachelor party when Dead Beat came out and I could not WAIT to get home and read it. I was even checking bookstores in the casinos and airport, hoping I might find it. Hopefully, the SciFi channel deal will come through, I think these would work great on t.v. Keep the books coming! Posted by: Nathan at May 18, 2005 04:01 PMHey Just Wanted to say that I loved Dead Beat. I can't wait for the next book to come. I would like to know more about Bob's past in realation to Mab and why he is so afraid of her, it could be a intresting part of the plot when Harry is doing another job for the winter queen. Later Posted by: Adam at May 17, 2005 02:57 PMI'm late getting to the site, but I just wanted to say congrats. This is a book that I waited for with bated breath. It did not disappoint me. I laughed and yelled at the Harry the entire time. (I am loving the Codex Alera stuff too, and just today actually reserved a copy of Academ's Fury.) Also- Please please re release the Dresden files in hard cover. Paperback doesnt last long enough. Posted by: Ruby at May 16, 2005 01:28 AMI'm a Japanese living in Canada, so my English skill is not good. But I love reading Harry's adventures. I'm still in middle of Dead Beat, and I love it so far. And last night I found something on the cover picture,it says "matrix" on Harry's staff in Japanese. What 's that supposed to mean? Posted by: Rumi at May 13, 2005 04:56 PMI just finished reading this book and absolutely loved. Can't wait another year for another one of Harry's adventures. I missed seeing Susan and Michael, but have hopes to see them again. Also enjoyed meeting new characters. Keep it up Jim,I'll be there right with you to enjoy your books. Posted by: laurie at May 12, 2005 12:27 PMI loved Dead Beat. I loved Mouse, Butters and I really enjoyed Sue. How cool was that?! My daughter and I talked about the book after we both read it for an hour - she couldn't wait for me to finish so we could hash it out. I can't wait for the next installment of the Dresden series, and am looking forward to the next in Codex Alera. Thanks Jim!! Laura Posted by: Laura Cole at May 11, 2005 09:18 PMHaving read it about three times I can now say, "Really loved the book". Any chance for a theory post? It would be a good opportunity to play with ideas while we're waiting for the next story. My thought is that Merlin is the bad apple on the council, he's too powerful to be so against Harry, there must be a reason for it. Posted by: Norman at May 11, 2005 05:14 PMRead the book in one sitting. Just could not put it down, the series just keeps getting better. I hope that the rumored series keeps up the quality of the books. Posted by: Alex at May 11, 2005 01:51 PMGreat read, I couldn't put down! I can't wait for the next one!! Posted by: Eddie at May 11, 2005 01:22 PMDead Beat was great. I relly liked Butters. "Polka will never die!" Mouse is cool too. I also loved how the scared the crap out of Mavra in the end, saying how much power he could get if he wanted it. If you think about, it's a whole lot.
Great book, keep 'em coming. Hope to see one before Christmas this year. Posted by: Nathan at May 11, 2005 06:21 AMI purchased Dead Beat and read it the day it came out, and I enjoyed every minute of it. I've succeeded in getting several friends and coworkers started on these books (and I know they’ve got others hooked on them as well), and I'm working on convincing the rest of my friends to read them too. I Can’t wait for the next book, and I’m looking forward to the RPG! Keep up the good work! Posted by: Matt W at May 11, 2005 12:41 AMYes, yes! I admit it! I began the Dresden Files on Audio to hear more of the delicious voice of James Marsters but ... let me tell you I have now purchased print copies and audio recordings of all The Dresden Files books. Jim-- Would just love to say "Dead Beat" is the best so far, although I keep saying that of every Dresden book you write...way to go... I love the whole series, started reading it because of James Marsters, and the first book had me hooked. I love that you included so many of the previous characters, I feel they make Dresden react and feel so much of how he does. I love that he might actually make Lasciel behave "differently", after all, everyone can change - all it takes is a catalyst, and Harry is all that and more. I absolutely Love Mouse, he is too special. I had a Shepperd who we all thought read our minds, he was too amazing, and Mouse acts like he did. I would love for there to be a Uber-Bond with him and Harry- after all- Harry needs one being he can count on NO MATTER WHAT. I hope Ebenezer is not bad, Harry needs one mentor figure that is good, but with flaws, everyones has them, and Harry just has to see that they can be flawed but loving. Needless to say, I want more Harry and soon, I have now started rereading the series because I just need that Harry-fix. Please write more soon, and make them as jam packed with possibilities as possible- the Sidhe being one i really love and Thomas the other. Thanks again, keep on writin.....
Just wanted to praise Dead Beat, I picked it up yesterday and just could not put it down, I finished it at 1230 last night and I am already looking forward to another. I feel that there must be something major coming in the Harryverse, I would like to find out what happened on Murphy's trip to Hawaii before I point any fingers at a possible traitor. May the Forzare be with you Is there any world if/when Dead Beat will be offered in paperback? Thank you. Posted by: James O. at May 9, 2005 11:46 AMJust finished reading "Dead Beat," and all I have to say is, "what a ride!" It was certainly most worth the cost of the hardcover...if not more. I know it will probably be another year before we see another Dresden book, but, to quote Harry, "hell's bells, it's worth the wait!" Posted by: Mark K. Gamiao at May 9, 2005 07:31 AMHey, Any chance the previous books will be out in hard back? (I'd love to have the whole collection in hardback!) Thanks! Posted by: Ommo at May 8, 2005 06:32 PMDoes anyone else think that Ebenezar McCoy is the one who betrayed the Senior Council. Its a little convienent that he convinced the council to join the fight and he didn't go to the hospital. I think Ramirez is possibly dirty too. Posted by: Scott at May 8, 2005 04:57 PMI am at loss at what to say.....this whole series has been incredible. "Dead Beat," was,"Totally wicked." The only statement I can give you Mr. Butcher that will give you the credit you deserve is, when is the next one coming out?!?! Posted by: Phil Hill at May 8, 2005 12:04 PMHoly cow, Jim. Woot! Yay! Posted by: Catie at May 8, 2005 12:02 PMI have a copy of deadbeat(and all 6 of the others Dresden File's titles). Read it EXCELLENT as is the rest of the series! So when can we expect the next installment? The books are great and I can hardly wait for the next one! More Murphy please! Congratulations! This book deserves it. Dead Beat was great. I don't believe it was the best book out of the series, but it was still up there. Kumori is an interesting conundrum, she's obviously White Council. Who? There weren't quite as many wise-cracks as I enjoyed in some of the previous novels, but then again, there was a quite a bit of action to make up for it. Mouse is awesome, enough said. Thomas is Thomas, a unique character. I can't really decide whether to like him or not.
