Has Ski Fi given news about possible renewal yet ? Or is it cancelled ?

I think Jim Butcher is a legend for bringing us The Dresden Files, i have read every book and they just get better and better. I have to say i was a little disappointed with the first episode of the show, i mean having Murphy without the blond hair and Morgan as an African-American was weird. BUT the show ended up like the books just getting better every episode. I hope they don't can the show after the first season. It has a lot of potential plus i'd like to see a couple more of the books adapted to the show, maybe make them two parters to get them more accurate to the books. I thank you Jim for writing the best books i have ever read.

I was totally jazzed to learn that they were making a Dresden Files t.v. series. I had just discovered the books not two months before the show's debute. I had read the first four book sby the time the show came out. And I'll admit, I was skeptical after watching the pilot. It was so different! They'd changed characters' names and appearances, and left others out entirely! What gives?! But, being a newly devoted Butcher fan, I kept watching, and the show got better with each episode. And as some other forums have pointed out, if the show was going to be 100% like the books, why not just read the books?

I would love to see The Dresden Files come back for another season. Along with Ghost Hunters, it's the only show on Sci FI worth watching.

Nothing would be more disappointing than if The Dresden Files does not return. It had gotten me watching the Sci-Fi channel again, recently. They would be foolish not to continue it when so many folks are digging their station because of it. It's a great show, period. (And I am in total agreement with the Painkiller Jane comment recently posted.)

Thanks to you, Jim Butcher, for creating such a wonderful character. You have won me back to the world of fantasy after a long while of reading and watching only science fiction. I have only just begun the first book, but I have a feeling that I am in it for the long haul!

I love the show; (I saw it before I read any of the books) and after seeing the show, I went out and bought the books. I love both!!! I realize that the show doesn't totally match the books. However, that is easy for me to forgive, because I enjoy the show so much. I really hope that they keep the series. It has been the only reason I watch the Scifi channel.

Don't cancel this show!!!! We love it! You run a show like painkiller jane but cancel a good one like Dresden? What gives? SCI Fi -FIGURE IT OUT!!!!!

Posted by: noname at May 17, 2007 03:31 PM

I agree with the ones who want Dresden Files to come back I really love Harry and liked the way he can take everyday things and make a magic tool. ( the hocky stick and drum stick) really it feel like he is really in to this world and uses what is around him and not walking around with a pointed hat and wand etc. he seems more real and hey who really knows what goes bump in the night is not really real. well I have not read the books yet but I will I just like the show..and Paul Blackthorne can eat crackers well you know lol ps Bob I love the part he plays I would like to have a friend like that LOL

Posted by: Joyce at May 11, 2007 04:52 PM

Lets hope the 'channel of doom' don't cancel this one. I'm glad it's shown on SKY in the UK as Im already boycotting Sciffy for the cancellation of SG1. Imagine, more cancellations and Sciffy will only have Wrestling left. Great show, love it rushing to read the books.

Posted by: CelticWytch at May 9, 2007 11:49 AM

My wife,Gill and I are big fans of Harry D;bought Storm Front as a holiday read in summer 2005 and went back to the bookshop after the holiday and bought the next seven!!
So you can imagine the anticipation when we learned that the TV series was comimg to the Uk on Sky
But what a disappointment--the screenwriters have totally wrecked it
Harry is not tall enough, where is his long duster, wheres his underground lab why has Bob been turned into a human presence why is Murphy tall and brunette not 5ft and blond wheres the VW beetle wheres his mothers amulet wheres his white vampire half brother, wheres the cat Mister wheres the dog, Mouse Nothing is right -a travesty

Posted by: graham mason at May 9, 2007 10:22 AM

I love the TV version of Bob. He's an interesting character in his own right, and he works much better on-screen than Bob-the-disembodied-spirit would. The TV version of Murphy could stand to be a bit more dangerous, but perhaps she'll develop with time.

All-in-all, it's a pretty good adaption to a 40-minute timeslot, and it's definitely one of the better shows on SciFi (Stargate, sadly, has gone downhill in recent years).

Please, bring back the Dresden files next season.

Posted by: Eric at May 8, 2007 03:56 PM

I discovered the Dresden Files from a colleague Helen and I was able to see the last three epidsodes. I have read all of the books and I find the series fascinating (books and tv). I look forward to a new season os Sci-Fi.

Posted by: Anne at May 7, 2007 01:13 PM

I started with the book series by getting the audio mp3 Stormfront (thanks to James Marsters having narrated it), and subsequently bought and read the rest of the series in the matter of about 3 weeks. I was hooked. I didn't realize Dresden was a show on Sci fi until the last ep aired, then I purchased and watched the rest of the seaon on ITunes. That being said, I thouroughly enjoyed this show, and am beyond hopeful that Sci-Fi will bring me a season 2 and many more! I have fallen in love with the portrayal of Harry, Murphy, Bob and Morgan, and I'm even on board with the hockey stick "staff" and jeep. This series as the ability to delve into some great storytelling. Sci Fi - more please!

Posted by: Laura at May 5, 2007 05:41 PM

The first episode left me with slight disappointment and yet there was an odd sense of "something" in this series. I watched the second episode and didn't stop. Though the series lacks the depth and breadth of the books, each episode was better than the last. There is real promise here of expanding and deepening these characters. Why oh why Connie and not Karrin??? What they did with Murphy I had a hard time with and still do. But she's gritty, she's vulnerable... she's slowly growing on me. I do like what they've done with Bob. Capturing a sparkly essence on the small screen and making him "real" in the way he needed to be would have been a tall order. Having him "personified" does not take away from what he is; it's a device and it works.

I'll keep watching the series. I'll buy the DVD season when it comes out. I'm hoping for it to continue and build into what it can and should be. I would LOVE a movie (or movie series). More importantly, Jim, KEEP WRITING!!!! For that's where Harry truly is... keep the stories coming.

Posted by: Susan Bee at May 5, 2007 03:28 PM

Although I was disappointed about the casting and writing I must say it was getting better. I would rather have the tv version of the "Dresden Files" on that not have it. There are not that many good shows on Sci-Fi channel, they do not give new shows time to flourish and get better, this will be one of them. Until BSG and Dresden comes back the only shows I am watching is SG1 and Atlantis. Sci-Fi do not make another mistake and cancel a good show like Dresden Files while keeping bad shows like Pain Killer Jane.

Posted by: NightHawk at May 5, 2007 05:23 AM

If this show is canceled I'll have absolutely no reason to watch the Scifi channel until BSG comes back (except for the occasional cheesy lame-o mini-series).

Sure the show is quite different from the books, but that's what makes watching the show AND reading the books good. If they were too similar I'd lose interest somewhere in there. We can't all be literary snobs.

Posted by: Lulu at May 4, 2007 01:34 AM

I saw the show first before reading the books, and while I agree the books are generally much better, I think the show is good too and it should continue.

Though the characters on the show have little more in common with those in the book beyond their shared names, they are good in their own right. Besides, you can't expect the show to be like the books - one of Jim Butchers books would take an entire season of 60 minute episodes. You have to judge the show and the writers on their own merits. After all, it says right on the opening credits "based" on the novels by Jim Butcher.

One thing I do like better about the show than the books is Bob. Bob in the books is too much like Harry, while in the show he is older, smarter, and while perhaps even more of a smart ass than Dresden, a much more eloquent one. I like what the shows writers have done with him.

Posted by: Slaeghunder at May 3, 2007 08:29 PM

I can't believe most of these posts are to save the show! It is the worst translation from book to series I have ever seen. My 14 yr old nephew and I are reading them together and we were so excited when we saw it was being made into a TV show. We got the good junk food and settled in to watch and made it through to the 3rd commercial break before we juct couldn't watch anymore. We felt, as fans, we'd been betrayed.
I have even tried to watch subsequent episodes but couldn't get beyond what was missing or outright wrong. It's not like they just adapted the concept and went their own way; they have totally bastardized these great books. The casting of the actress to play Murphy is laughable and since when does Dreden have beautiful blondes crawling out of bed with him? And don't get me started on Bob! He's a spirit of intellect, glittery and orange, inhabiting a human skull, not a freaking coporeal figure.
I agree with some of the other postings that Mister Dresden should go to Hollywood. At least then, maybe real fans of the series will get what they want, accuracy.

Posted by: Shirley at May 3, 2007 11:21 AM

I really hope that the show is picked up for another season. Yes, there are some inconsistancies between the books and the tv series but that's to be expected when switching media. But I believe that, for the most part, SciFi has done a pretty good job of pulling the vision from Mr. Butcher's head and converting it to something that can fit in a 60 minute window. It is ridiculous to expect "the story lines would match a little bit more to the books" when I know that no one out there has read one of the books in 60 minutes while taking a several minute "commercial" break every so often.
One thing that I thought was cool was how the series progressively grows more like the books, adding monsters and visual magic, as the story goes on. It lets those who didn't read the books first get used to some of the "stranger" aspects of Harry's world.
Jim, if you're reading these, it was cool to see you as an extra and also a thumbs up to the Blue Beetle salute where you see it show up on set in one episode, can't tell me that wasn't your doing!

Posted by: Joel at May 3, 2007 09:12 AM

Watching the series here in the U.K was made problematic by the big quarrell between Virgin media and Sky t.v.Virgin media customers had Sky 1,which was screening the show, removed from their t.v package. So viewing figures over here were probably affected.Although the show didn't match up to the books it showed promise ,and was way better than most network t.v tripe.I hope it gets another chance and better, less sentimental scriptwriters.

Posted by: Sarah at May 2, 2007 04:31 AM

I love The Dresden Files and because of the show I discovered the books. I am totally addicted to both I read all 9 of the books in like a month. I know about scifi's history with cancelling good shows but it did save Stargate after it was dropped from Showtime and went on to do what like 5 more sesaons. They are bringing back Eureka in June so I'm not giving up hope that they will learn from their mistakes of the past and definitely bring back Dresden and maybe it will be bigger and better then season 1 because of all of us fans and our input.

Posted by: Chris at May 1, 2007 10:11 PM

I am really happy to read the pro's and con's of the SciFi channel adaptation of the "Dresden Files." I have read all of the books and like a few of you had my doubts. Every Sunday night I watched and kept hoping that the story lines would match a little bit more to the books, but as time has gone by I became more and more attached to the actors playing the characters that we all love. Murphy is still a bit off can't get used to her "brown" hair, and the little bits here and there that don't match, the hockey stick, missing overcoat and hat, and the overall look of Harry's office/home...If they decide to bring it back my Sunday nights will be complete, and I hope it doesnt go by the way side like a few of my other favorite tv shows, like "The Surface" and "Invasion".
So if anyone from the SciFi Channel who is peeking at these comments, PLEASE BRING IT BACK!

Posted by: Lola at May 1, 2007 07:12 PM

I've been a fan of the Dresden files for a long time. I started reading right after book 3 appeared and was thrilled that they were translating Harry to the small screen. I was a little disappointed with the series at first, but grew to love it. I thought the "Storm Front" episode was by far the best. Perhaps because I knew the backstory, but it seemed to be more carefully crafted than the episodes written outside the books. The TV Murphy does still bother me, but not enough to give up on the series. I think Harry is a little older than I imagined, but otherwise pretty darned close to my image of him. I hope the series returns - it certainly was a good reason to watch TV on Sunday nights!

Posted by: Vicki Ewart at May 1, 2007 03:56 PM

My husband and I are big Jim Butcher Fans. I've read every book he has ever written. Some time TV and movie addaptions of books have smooth transitions and better explainations than their written conunterparts. That was not the case with The Dresden Files. Don't get me wrong. We watch every episode, but the show is kind of a let down. The scripts and special effect are mediocre. I can say that Bob on the TV version is a vast improvement and the actor playing Dresden is what I pictured Harry looking and acting like. I hope Sci-Fi renews it or better yet a Movie Version with a real special effect budget and better script writting. I'm not pushing another show but another series of books were addapted into a TV show for Lifetime (sundays). That show flows better for some reason.

Posted by: Ingrid Ross at May 1, 2007 02:44 PM

One of the few things me and hubby watch together. We are addicted to the show AND the books and would love to see it hang around, but as someone mentioned, Sci Fi's track record for keeping good shows is lacking. But I have to have my Bob fix!!! (Paul Blackthorne is not to hard on the eyes though ;)

Posted by: Nicole at April 30, 2007 08:39 AM

The first time I watch the show, I was a bit disappointed. However, the second time I watch it (which was immediately right after), I tried to sort of separate the book from the tv show (hard but possible), and found myself enjoying the show.

Absolutely love the books and in between new books, it's nice to watch the tv show for my Dresden fix.

Posted by: Bernadette G. at April 27, 2007 08:14 PM

Majorly bad writing? How about some of the best? I had never heard of the books until the show but I found the show very appealing in its own right. This version of Harry, though not the book's, is interesting and subtle enough to make for a compelling show. It doesn't have to be like the books. In fact, I would find that kind of pointless. Why do you need two versions of the exact same thing? Inspired interpretation adds much more to my world than carbon copies.

P.S.
For those of you who like Dresden, I'd like to recommend the books of Isaac Adamson, e.g. Tokyo Suckerpunch. While not a wizardy series, this comic mystery series is very much in the flawed-hero-you-love-and-feel-sorry-for genre.

Posted by: Neverfox at April 27, 2007 11:47 AM

I'm enjoying both the series and the books, together and separately. For me, they compliment each other. I can understand that some things work better changed, as far as the series. This has brought us a Bob who is much more a part of things, which I'm heartily in favor of. OTOH, I'm having a hard time getting used to the series Murphy. But I can handle the little things. I guess I get different things out of each source, and enjoy both because of that. I am personally *not* in favor of a series-long story arc - you can lose a lot of prospective fans that way. And I would actually prefer original stories for the series, not remakes of the books, because that invites too much nitpicking, IMO.

I just hope there is a Season 2!

Posted by: Mooncat at April 26, 2007 08:51 PM

I really want to love the television show more than I do. Although it pales in comparison to the novels, it could be easily improved.

Individual, self-contained, episodes may be great for casual fans, but those fans will not bring the ratings necessary to keep the show alive.

The producers should aim for the hard-core audience and consider adapting each book, presenting it as a season of the show, or at least multi-episode arcs. An extended story would allow them to delve deeper into the extended mythology of the books and allow for greater character development.

Posted by: Larry Fields at April 26, 2007 06:53 PM

Is there a petition to stop the show? I LOVE Butcher's work as a writer and I love the Dresden Files series, and frankly this show isn't doing either justice. I mean yeah it's great that he is making some money and all, but Sci Fi is murdering what's good about Dresden with this crap. Kill the show, sell the rights to Hollywood for a film version that doesn't suck.

Posted by: Ben at April 25, 2007 10:07 PM

I have watched the Dresden Files from the 1st episode and absolutly love it! I could barely wait for the week to pass by for the next show to air! I really hope Sci-Fi keeps this great show going!

Posted by: Michelle at April 25, 2007 09:18 PM

The SciFi channel is famous for ditching good shows in favor of creature features and other dreck. Their yardstick is cost per episode, so if you see something with good production values (eg., Dresden Files, Stargate SG-1, etc.) it's probably too rich for their blood.

Posted by: James B at April 25, 2007 06:19 PM

I did end up setting up a MySpace site for this renewal campaign as well! I just haven't been able to post on this board since then for some reason. The site is: http://www.myspace.com/thegreycloaks

Posted by: Wryn Mackey at April 25, 2007 03:00 PM

I'm liking the 'Grey Cloaks' moniker. To be brief, we're hooked on the show, the differences from the books make the show in some respects even more enjoyable especially for someone like me that has read each one of the books 5+ times.

I haven't dug deeply, but the little research I did on per show ratings sure makes me nervous about Sci Fi's ultimate decision

Posted by: Dru at April 25, 2007 10:12 AM

Comparing the books to the show is not fair. The books are WAYYYY better. However, on it's own the show is good. It needs work (dialog, ditch the hockey stick for a rune-inscribed cane or something, etc), but hey how many shows are really great in their first season? I've already signed the petition and am hoping for another season.

Note to Jim B: The worst part about waiting for the next season is not getting any info about whether it looks good or not for another season. Please keep us fans informed! Nothing worse than getting our hopes (and emotions) up and find out that the next season was a no-go a month ago and nobody told us. Even a "Still working on it" every once-in-a-while would be nice.

Posted by: Ron S. at April 24, 2007 10:19 PM

I'm not a huge fan of the television series, but I love Jim Butcher enough that I'll support anything he does...

Posted by: Brenda Davis at April 24, 2007 09:54 PM

Honestly the writing for the show was horrible... with so much to pull from ...with such wonderful books the writers of the show should be taken out and beat senseless.

Posted by: Ishalan at April 24, 2007 09:31 PM

While I absolutely love The Dresden Files in book form, the TV show was extremely lacking. The characterizations were severly off and it lacked a lot of the character and charm I found so captivating in the book. Not to mention that the show completely lacked continuity and that Harry is running around with a wand (that was destroyed once already) and a hockey stick that is apparently supposed to be a blasting rod, but has yet to be explained. This show COULD have been great. Instead it's mediocre at best and suffers from majorly bad writing. THe thing I mourn most is the Bondification of Dresden. He's not a swauve, older man whom manages to get the girl and hardly really does anything (anyone notice Bob casts most of the spells), but a kind of geeky, barely put together guy with wit, courage, and the magic to sometimes back it all up. I would love to see that Dresden appear, but it seems he's been supplanted for good.

Posted by: Malkie at April 24, 2007 09:07 PM

I started watching a few months ago. The Dresden files is one of the best shows out there. I hate watching something and then getting into it to have it taken from me. They can't do this to the fans.

Posted by: stephanie franklin at April 24, 2007 05:06 PM

Sent my notes off....

If SciFi doesn't renew this, and keeps ECW (and the other crap they show), I just may have to swear off watching the SciFi ever, ever again.

And as a Brown Coat, I have no problem also donning a Grey Cloak, or a Black Leather/Canvas Duster.... whichever. Just let me know which!!!

Posted by: Rich - Boston MA (Not too far from Salem Home of Wizards and Witches) at April 24, 2007 10:27 AM

Its hard to come by good shows on TV these days with all these fake reality shows about. This show should be renewed for another season, the story is just getting started and promises great things to come. The characters of the Dresden Files are wonderful and fascinating to watch. Please scifi bring back The Dresden Files for another season!

Posted by: Courtney at April 23, 2007 08:24 PM

Hi there
I have to agree with everyone, this series has a lot of potential and I really hope its givent he chance to to just that. I love the character of Bob, he is just too good :)

Anyways, here's hoping for a long and healthy life Dresden!

Posted by: Jeanelize at April 23, 2007 04:12 PM

best scifi type show since the x-files -- a must re-new !!!!!!!

Posted by: dd at April 23, 2007 03:23 PM

I have been a big Dresden fan since I read book 1. My husband and I have both read all the books and wait for each new release. We were so excited that they were making the books into a TV show. We programed our TV to go to Sci-Fi every sunday night at 8:00 (CST). We never missed one. I truely hope that they will bring it back as there is nothing good on TV anymore and shows like this are family fun and great for the imagination. All 3 of our teen-aged boys watch with us and if they can't be home for it, they record it to watch ASAP.

Posted by: Pinky at April 22, 2007 08:26 PM

Is there some doubt as to whether the series will be renewed or not? I got the feeling SciFi was going to do another season of it.

Posted by: Matt C. at April 22, 2007 07:22 PM

I just found the Dresden Files a short while ago and became instantly hooked. I've gotten and read the most of the books. I hope SciFi doesn't cancel one of the only good shows on TV any more!

Posted by: Cat at April 20, 2007 04:30 PM

The Grey Cloaks remark was great! and yes I am also a firefly fan.

Please dont let Dresden files be cancelled! This show is growing in character and what a character it is about! Harry Dresden, you have our hearts as well as our minds and we will rally behind your standard any day!

Posted by: debra at April 19, 2007 01:34 AM

With all the crap that's on tv these days, it's often hard to come by something that's unique, entertaining, and praiseworthy. The Dresden Files has done it.

Watching the show inspired me to go looking for the books. I started with "Proven Guilty", but I was still able to jump right in because I was so well acquainted with the characters.

Please keep the show going.

Posted by: Southpaw at April 19, 2007 12:25 AM

They've already cancelled Stargate SG-1. They can't cancel another great show! I'm sick of horribly written made-for-tv movies and want more of the fantastic series like Dresden Files, Stargate Atlantis, Farscape, and Dark Angel (Why's they cancel that after two seasons?) Save The Dresden Files!

Posted by: Jessi at April 18, 2007 10:39 PM

Hey SciFi execs, WAKE UP!!! I discovered this show on I-Tunes , where it is a VERY popular down-load. I have the entire first season & I watch them over & over!!! I also plan on buying the DVDs. This ofcourse means $$$$$$$$$. Don't lose this show. The only other thing on SciFi worth watching is DOCTOR WHO. And they buy that fron the BBC!!!!

Posted by: Mark Hunt at April 18, 2007 08:40 PM

Sent letters to both contacts. Let's save Harry! BTW in my letter I said that the only thing that would make me happier than renewing "The Dresden Files" would be for SciFi to resurrect "Firefly" with the original cast and Joss at the helm. Since I'm not holding my breath for that I ask them to please give Harry another chance.

Posted by: Sheena Harden at April 18, 2007 06:45 PM

This show has alot of possibilities. It's one of the strongest shows that Sci-Fi has put together yet. Harry is great! Bob is great! This a unique and original story going on here. If all the Sci-Fi shows were like this it won't have to sell it's self out with ECW to get it's ratings up! Bring on a second season of the Dresden Files!

Posted by: cathy s at April 18, 2007 05:55 PM

The Powers That Be at Scifi are completely out of their minds if they don't renew the show. It did better than Battlestar Galactica, and that got renewed...Dresden must return!

Posted by: Jean at April 18, 2007 05:45 PM

Dresden Files is about an interesting character who shows lots of room for growth and improvement, which he should be allowed to do through a renewal of his TV series.

The Dresden Files is a cool show, made me discover the books which I ordered from Amazon. Can't wait for the show to return for a new season. Please Skifi don't cancel it !
