The Future of the Dresden Files
Posted by priscellie at May 6, 2007 05:43 PM

DearAuthor.com brings us good news about the future of The Dresden Files:

You know you are big time when you get to sell unnamed book 12 and unnamed book 13.
Jim Butcher’s DRESDEN FILES 12 and DRESDEN FILES 13, new books in the successful series, now also a television show, featuring Harry Dresden, wizard-for-hire, in Chicago, to Anne Sowards at Roc, in a significant deal, by Jennifer Jackson at the Donald Maass Literary Agency.
Looks like we're safe for the time being!

Jim has stated on several occasions that he is planning to write a total of about 20 Dresden Files "case books" like those we've read so far, then cap off the series with an Apocalyptic Trilogy. The tenth book in the series, Small Favor, is due out in Spring 2008.

Discuss this at the Forums here.

When I first saw commercials for the Dresden Files, I immditaely wanted to see it. Then my girlfriend showed me that, the series I loved deeply was actually inspired by a series she was fanatical over. I'm not a fast reader, but in the course of 4 months, I've gone from never reading a single Dresden book to starting book 5. Keep in mind I was deprived of books 3-7 for about a month. That means I've become addicted enough to kill 4 (soon to be 5) books in the course of 3 months. I love this series, and hate the idea of its end being half-way here. At least I can hope for another five or eight years of my favorite wizard.

I didnt know anything about dresden until i flipped the channel to scifi to watch stargate and was a bit dissapointed when i saw it wasnt on thinking, here we go with another "ok but not great" scifi movie and didnt have anythign else to do so i watched the first episode of dresden files.

since then ive bought and read every book atleast three/four times each, that was a suprise to me because the only other 5+ book series that i completely re-read was The Wheel of Time books.

so i look forward to the next couple books and pray that ye will write more than just 20 (espically since it takes me only a day to read one of the books, they dont last long enough, bah, curses)

20 books?! Holy smokes Mr. B it should be double that! The Dresden Files is my new addiction and certainly better than any male wizard novels out there (inlcuding Harry Potter).

Please Jim, please make many more of Dresden novels! Pretty please with cherry on top?!

The Dresden Files TV series is the only TV series where I did not have a problem with the changes they made to the look of the thing to suit TV. I found Bob's transformation into a ghost logical as speaking to a blue spark and having to explain to the audience each time that he is a spirit of the air would be naff. SCIFI.com is a network, networks are not very bright when it comes to judging quality shows - look at Fox - they cancelled Firefly. Let them know in no uncertain terms what mental midgets they are - maybe someone will listen and fire the twerp who makes calls like these.

Like a lot of other folks ,I didn't latch onto the harry Dresden books till after I saw the tv show AND I'VE WORKED IN A LIBRARY FOR 20 YEARS! Well better late than never! I am also keeping my fingers crossed that I can play test the new Dresden Files Role Playing Game. I've been playing those since 1976! A chance to BE harry? You bet!!( Well with my dice rolling maybe I can be TootToot.)

Unlike what seems to be a majority of the posters prior to me here, I got into the books before the TV series hit the screen.

They are fantastic, Harry is gritty and seems to get the tar whaled out of him on a regular basis (at least once per book :-D).

In direct contrast, whilst I enjoyed the television series as a stand alone, they were not really Harry Dresden as I knew him, changing the Skull to a foppish well dressed man didn't really work for me and on the whole I found it dumbed down and lightened up for the tv masses.

I for one am not terribly upset on a personal level that they have cancelled series 2 through Sci Fi Channel. Try to get the first series remade through the BBC or Channel 4 in the UK and work to keep the feel.

What do you mean only 20 books........Thats not nearly enough!
Absolutely love the books but the show leaves me a bit flat. It doesn't quite capture the magic that is uniquely Harry.
Keep writing Jim, not many writers keep me enthralled past book 5, but i love this series. Must admit that I love the Alera series as much so please please please continue to enjoy their tales so you can pass them on.

So because I saw this cute guy in a show that looked like I could get into it I began watching the dresden files. I had no idea it was based on books by Jim Butcher. But when I did I went stone crazy. I have bought all of the Dresden Files series and I thought I was in love with the character in TV. But whoowee. The Harry in the books is now the new love of my life. (I think that might be a tad pathethic.) Go ahead ask me if I care. I so don't. I love everything about the books and the TV series. I'm keeping all finger and toes crossed that they renew the series for at least two more seasons. 13 episodes are not going to cut it. Then I found out that Mr. Butcher has every intention of writing at the very least 20 books. All I can say is "I WORSHIP THY GENIUS!" I'm like a junkie going through withdrawal until I can get my hand on the next book SMALL FAVOR. Until then I'm content to reread all the other ones. GO HARRY!

I had to laugh when I read that one commenter even got his mom who just retired as a teacher to read Storm Front. I just retired from the University of Delaware after 28 years, and just finished Death Masks. Like others who have commented, I discovered the books via the SF channel tv show. I liked the show and a friend of mine who regularly writes reviews for both mysteries and fantasies said that the opinion among fans of the genres was that the tv show barely touched on how much fun the books were. As a satisfied viewer of the tv series, what else could I do but start reading the books?

Looking forward to reading to the end. And getting my kids interested. My kids tried to get me interested in Harry Potter, but he never took for me. Not sure why. But the Dresden Files, definitely.

The first two stories I ever wrote were a fantasy story and noir detective story, both started when I was in 6th grade. I finished the fantasy story but never the mystery. Very nice to read The Dresden Files, combining the best of both worlds.

I've just finished book one and started book two. I love them. I just wanted to know any word on the new season of Dresden files the show. I hope that it happens it's awesome too.

I started reading the books after the first episode hit UK tv a few months ago and haven't stopped. My husband and I are fighting over the books as we both love them so much. I really hope there is more than one series. Looking forward to reading them all!!

Well done Mr Butcher!

Posted by: Gayle at June 25, 2007 04:07 PM

Jim---I just gotta say, ABSOLUTELY AWESOME! I just finished reading "White Night" and I am so bummed because I ran out of Dresden! I going to start on the "Codex Alera series" tonight, with no doubt that they will be just as great. I don't want to read anything else, literally!!
Oh...Is ROC ever going to put the rest of the books out in hardback? That would be great if they did, because paperbacks don't keep that great when you read them multiple times. NO WAY am i selling these or donating them!!!

Keep up the phenomenal work J.B.!!

I found the books by total acident! I had watched the series and liked it but always missed the part part where they said they were absed on books by Jim Butcher.

One day in the book store, I found Proven Guilty and was like wha?? There are more of these? I went and bought the first one, I wasn't even finished with it before I went to Amazon and ordered each and everyone that I could!!

I'm an avid reader and have read a lot of books but I have never read someone who makes me laugh out loud so often - no matter where I'm reading the book!!

I end each book with with "I soooo Dig this guy"

Jim, if ya read these - Dude, you ROCK!!!

I started reading the books before the tv show and I couldn't wait for the series. I could not put the books down and I have also read most of the books twice now. Even reading the books twice they are still exciting for me. Anyone who hasn't read these books i definetly suggest you do.

Hi--

Well, I came across *The Dresden Files* with the TV series on Sci-Fi channel. I liked it, especially the adaptation of "Storm Front", and kept thinking to myself that I really had to check out the books that the show was based on.
Then I was at MediaWestCon over Memorial Day weekend and one of my friends there highly recommended the books and said he had read *all* of them. So Monday, I went to a locally owned bookstore and bought books 1 and 2 (Storm Front and Fool Moon). I started reading and MAN--were they GOOD!!! I couldn't put the books down.
I had finished bothe books in two days, returned to the same bookstore and bought books 3 & 4. And on Friday ordered the rest of the series from Amazon. (and hey, they were having a 4-for-3 sale on paperback books too!). I gobbled up books 3 and 4, impatiently waited for the rest of the rest of the books to arrive, and then zoomed through those books too! Now I'm recommending them to everyone I know (I even got my Mom to read "Storm Front", and she just retired from teaching this year).
Anyway, I just wanted to say THANK YOU MR. BUTCHER! What an awesome series-- I can't wait to read more! There's two genres of fiction I grew-up reading: Fantasy and Mystery (including hard-boiled detective stories) and *The Dresden Files* managed to combine 'em both! I love the humor of the books, and the characters, but it's the sense of trying to figure out what's going on (something the best mysteries have) that keeps me turning the pages!
And the books, especially *Dead Beat* with Sue, are most unpredictable! Awesome!

Sincerely,

--Jackie

I became an instant fan of the Dresden Files show. When I saw that the show was based on a series of books, I found an online excerpt from one of the books. WOW! I was hooked. I bought the first 4 books from the Sci Fi channel store and 2 weeks later, ordered the next 4. Mr. Butcher, thank you. I love to read, but the Dresden stories are really great. I just love them. You've made Harry Dresden so real.
I am a fan for life! Thank you again.

Hi there I am wandering why, according to the Publishing notes on this site Proven Guilty was out nearly two years ago did it take till last week for my local book shop to get it in???

That means according to this time line you American fans will have read the 20th book by the time I reach book seventeen. Which is odd considering it took less than five months for sky in the UK to screen the series, which is no where near as good as the books.

But that doesnt make it a bad show I never missed an episode!

Thanks Mr Butcher

oh my giddy gosh.... 20!!! YAY!!! Ack! i don't know if i can handle waiting, but then again if i got them all at once i probably wouldn't eat or leave my house for a week....

but hey, congats jim! i love the charachters that you have created, and i'm rather proud for you. thanks for sharing!!!

Kewl! 20 Books! Apocalyptic Trilogy! Music to me ears!

Jim Butcher is the best I've read. Easily on par to Robert Jordan and JRR Tolkien. His Dresden series is simply an enthralling read and His Codex Alera series is absolutely rich in detail. I'm looking forward to buying more of his books

Posted by: Ender Halcyon at June 6, 2007 03:06 AM

Between the Dresden Files and the Codex Alera two of the all time best fantasy series I have ever encountered. Jim Butcher is the konungr (O.N. n. king) of fantasy writers. Of course, any reader of the Dresden files that is also a fan of Spiderman KNOWS that Jim is the only fantasy writer who can get in Spidey's head and so his authoring a Spiderman book was just common sense on the part of the PTB. All hail the gift-giver! Until Mac burns a steak sandwich and Tavi becomes a vord keep up the good work, Jim!

Posted by: Jeremy at June 5, 2007 05:41 PM

Wow.
Just......wow.
I believe I've read almost every SciFi/Fantasy author out there, and nothing even comes close to the Dresden Files. I'm currently reading White Night, and really trying to s-t-r-e-t-c-h it out because the next book won't be released till next year. I'm having Dresden withdrawals!
Jim, you're an amazingly talented author; I enjoy your writing tremendously. Keep up the great work!

Got hooked on the SciFi series (have first season on my laptop via iTunes) and now discovering the books. Please write more faster! I just ordered the last two books to give me all the Dresden books currently out. Some I have read in 2 days (very unusual, even for the Discworld series by Terry Pratchett which I also love!!). I know the series can't be just like the books or they would all be two or three part TV episodes. So I like them both! Great to have discovered your books!

I have just spent the last 3 days in Chicago with Dresden and loved it all. I have tried and tried to write in first person and man it's difficult but Dresden files pulls it off effortlessly. I love this series and the characters are wonderfully real. I can see Michael and Shiro, I can see Bob and Lash in my mind as clearly as I see myself. I hope there are many, many more of this series. I also hope that this smart, classy series of stories continue forever. Thank you Mr. Butcher for a wonderful ride. I'm looking forward to visiting you in Alera as well.

Hi I have to say that The Dresden Files is the Best series of books that I have ever read:D
The books I have so far are Storm Front, Death Masks, Proven Guilty and I have on order at my local book store Blood Rites and Dead Beat. I also find the series to be funny and picked with lots of action and drama. I've also been watching the T.V. series on Sci-Fi and I heard that they may not make a Season 2:( I sure hope that they will make a Season 2 because it's just a great show to watch:)

Thanks,
Miya

And please never stop writing your work is just Amazing.

My father's getting upwards in age, and not being a wizard, he's not going to live for another 180 years. He's asked me to log on here to try to prod Jim into writing faster. I'd have to agree, since the TV show isn't doing it as well as the books for my "Dresden Fix". I love Jim, and his writing style is amazing. So... *prod, prod, then taps the arm.* Hurry up with my fix, man!

thank god there are more to come! im more hooked on this than any other book ive ever read. harry dresden is irresistable, and u fall in love with him right away. id cry if u stopped writing the dresden files! thanks so much jim for the killer books

I have always hated this genre. Then I watched my first Dresden Files. I am so hooked!!!! On May 13th, I bought all the paperbacks that Borders had (1-6) and just completed them, have downloaded the first season on i-Tunes and had to get on the website to see when the 1st season DVD is coming out, because I couldn't find it in stores. I really hope you give Harry and his crew more than just twenty books for us to read.
Thank you. Mary

Love the references, obscure and otherwise, to all of the scifi, fantasy, and comedy I grew up with. My kids like the stories, but they look at me like I've grown a second head when I laugh at a tossed-in reference to Monty Python or some eighties cultural thing.

I wish the sci fi channel could do these works justice... Mr. Butcher may become the Ian Fleming of science fiction: great stories that become mass media video successes having little in common the fine print tales they share a common title with. Not that I'm against him making a buck or two on the screen, especially if it supports his ability to keep cranking out some of the best books I've ever read.

Bravo!

Posted by: Doug at May 17, 2007 07:40 PM

As with others, I was hooked with the very 1st episode of the 'Dresden Files' on SCIFI and when I saw an author listed, immediately set out to buy 'the book'. The PTBs must be smiling on my head because I found....8 books at Borders! Oh happy day! What a great read I've had during my convalescence! Can't wait for 'White Night' in paperback.

Like everyone else, very happy indeed with Butcher's books, they are wonderful, funny and characters are amazing!! I enjoyed the t.v. series, too, and hope a 2nd is in the works as well..certainly have enough material for quite a run!!

A friend suggested that I would love this new tv series called The Dresden Files on Sci/Fi Network. I kept missing the show and another friend walked into work one day and handed me the first two novels of the series. I read the first book in about a day and a half, which I have NEVER done before. I have, since then, purchased all the books (by trudging off to a used bookseller, eBay & Amazon.com). Needless to say, I am hooked and do immensely enjoy the storylines. It's so great to have a crime drama complete with magic, faeries and all sorts of creatures and whatnots. I'm only on book IV now and hope more is uncovered about Harry's parents. Congratulations on all your success and keep up the good work!

Posted by: ellylons at May 17, 2007 01:35 AM

Freakin' Sweet!!! I am so glad to hear that there are plenty of more Dresden books coming in the future. I love where the stories are going and I am hoping that the Sci Fi Channel picks up the Dresden Files for another season. This news has just made me a happy man..

I watched the TV series first and liked it a lot. I'm glad that it will continue. However, I LOVE the books that I started reading after I started watching the series. Mr. Butcher, the detail and comedy inherent in your books keeps me riveted. I feel as though I actually transported into the story. I can't wait for the next book and I really hope that you really plan to write at least 20 books about Harry Dresden. I've decided that since I love the books so much, I will read the Alera books. Thanks for your wonderful contribution to sci-fi/fantasy writing!!!

Posted by: S.Lewis at May 15, 2007 10:40 AM

I love the tv show! I didn't even know about the books until today. I'm an avid reader and I'm looking forward to starting the series. Please don't let them cancel the show. Take it to the C/W if you have to, just DON'T cancel it please.

I really enjoyed the tv series. It got me so interested in Dresden, That I've bought the first five. I finished 3 so far. They are even better than the series. But I really liked BOB in the series. If Sci-Fi doesn't pick it up again try Lifetime. They did a great job with Tanya Huff's Blood series. Keep it up. joy

I really love the "Dresden Files" books. I was wondering if you where going to bring back Susan, part vampire, in anyone of your books. I think Harry should try and find a cure for her problem.

Posted by: Anne McQuiston at May 13, 2007 06:28 PM

Jim, love the books - not so the show - the story of the books in the show would have been better.
Is the difference down to the same sort of problems that plague the genre with the fundementalists decrying them and the likes of harry Potter or just TV/film making a horrlicks of already good material. myself and the Bro in law often wonder about this - over here in Ireland and The uk you could go a lot darker and more complex with the story line and we'd love it a lot more - you gotta write faster though just finished number 9 - was sorry to see lash go - or has she? and how is this going to affect Harrys powers - he was getting stronger - I guess all be revealed soon enough - get the guy some lovin' though he could use the release!

Just wondering if anyone else is a little disappointed in the TV series? I mean Bob as a human? Even with the special effects, it takes away from the magic a lot. Also, where is the blue beetle?! Ever since I read the first book I've wanted one cause it seems that they can really take a beating! Mr. Butcher, I really love these novels. I've introduced them as my Author Study materials in my Intro to Lit. class. Thanks and good luck in the future!

Sometime I have some probs with the english slang like in the last book proven guilty "dresden taxo... you snuff it we stuff it..." does these means: you have something to transport, we will transport it? I think so, thats will make sense for me

sorry about my germlish (german slang...)

by the way is here any chance to the TV show on dvd? Cause we never will get the show here in germany...
