Dresden Files TV Show Canceled
Posted by priscellie at August 3, 2007 02:22 PM

We finally have our answer, and it's just as we suspected: the Dresden Files TV show has been canceled. Read more about the decision at TV Guide.com.

While we wish SciFi could have decided differently, we're still grateful for the twelve great episodes that aired earlier this year. Largely thanks to the TV show, book sales tripled, and no doubt more new fans will continue to discover the series through reruns and the DVDs. Speaking of which, the DVDs will be released this Tuesday! Buy them here on Amazon.com.

Additionally, fans of Paul Blackthorne will be cheered to learn that he has joined the cast of ABC's Big Shots.

Discuss this story on the forums here.

I just want to say as one of your youngest fans (14) that the books rock and ask when the war will end or if it goes on thoughout the books?

Damn! I just finished book eight and watched the whole series, rented, about two months ago, and was looking forward to season II. The same thing happened with "Firefly," another fantastic show on Sci-Fi that was canceled for some unknown and ridiculous reason.

In the meantime, I can watch people eat bugs, drink snake urine, or Brett (disgusting) Michaels make out with plastic bimbos. Uck. No thanks. If this is what America wants to watch, no wonder we can no longer do math and science; our brains have atrophied!!

As for me, I'm going back to the books. Two left to read, then I'm moving on to the Alerra books.

Keep up the good work Jim! Our brains need you! ;-)

I liked the show. Actually, that's how I found the books. Ended up buying every book in the Dresden series. Just can't get enough.

Just want to chime in and say sorry that the series got cancelled, Paul Blackthorn made a great Harry, and even though she was a brunette, I thought the actress that did Murphy was superb. Like a lot of people, I went out and bought one of the books after seeing the series (many people bought more than one.) Having a TV series of your books made and run on the Sci Fi channel is something many writers only dream about - you actually saw it happen, and better still, the TV series was pretty darn good. Congratulations on your good fortune, and hope you get to see it happen again in the future.

I loved the show and the books. To me, it is not about the TV show mimicking the book completely but another art form imitating it to some degree. Granted, there were just some special effects that would have been too expensive to produce for a TV show but would be great for a movie though. It saddens me that the SciFi channel didn't pick up more of the stories but life goes on.

Posted by: Jim S at July 5, 2008 09:58 AM

I love the books, but refuse to watch the show given all that I've read about it. Far too much deviation from the books for my tastes. I'm a purist, what can I say? I do wish that the show had run longer, if only to create more buzz for the book series.

Posted by: Alice at June 23, 2008 12:08 AM

I've read over a quite a few of these comments. It's funny but the Sci-Fi show actually drew me to the books and then the audiobooks (much easier on this old man's eyes). Which, by the way Jim, i'd love it if the rest of them got finished.

Anyway, back to the comment....where was i? Oh yeah, for the "odd man out" who hated the TV show: I have to ask, were you born yesterday? It's strange "when" the show or movie matches the book which is almost never. TV & movies, by the understanding at heart, are never expected to be "as good" as the books. The books are always the purest and least messed with releases of the author's imaginations so they will, pretty much, always be the best representations.

The TV show was done as well as possible consider Sci-Fi's well-known imfamous run of B-rater movies that look like "tweaked" 80s movies that they STILL (i might add) are running while TDF got taken off the air. Compared to a great deal of Sci-Fi's exports, The Drasden Files was almost pure "mastery" considering the solidity of it's make and good special-effects, not to mention their brilliant cast.

I love Jim's books in the way I love Orson Scott Card's books. And if Jim's ever read any of Scott Card's books, he probably understands the depth of that statement. Jim and Scott have this thing about the underdog pulling it off after being beaten, battered, blasted, and everything else Harry Dresden went through.

I honestly' don't "want" to see a Dresden movie because i would hate to hear about Jim's irritation about how badly the movie company would chop his ideas into pieces (just ask JK Rowling about that) and it would be better to remember Jim's work in it's best forms, written and spoken.

Still, for what it's worth and for how long it ran, it was a good run Jim. I had gotten to the point to where I really got bored with TV until the Dresden Files hit (that and Dr. Who's revision).

You know, now that i think about this, we COULD pull off the ole Star Trek move and just keep bugging the heck out of Sci-Fi until they simply would put new episodes out just to shut us up.

I dunno though, it's really all up to Jim and how much it's worth to him to go back into it. I would love to see Paul Blackthorne back as Harry but not at the expense of any more chipping away at Jim's stories.

Like everyone else, i sit there and had my critical moments where i slapped the ole couch arm and said "That never happened!" and got some good giggles at the substitutions to some of the things that weren't kept original.

But, you know, i think I'll miss ole Bob most of all. His dry humor was just fantastic along with his unquenchable sexual urges.

But then TV is fickle and things can change when you least expect it. Will the Dresden Files ever come back? It's like ole Jack Burton once said "...never can tell".

Cheers Jim.

For what its worth, I loved the show. I've never read one of the books, in fact, I didn't even know it was based on books. I'm soooo relieved to know that there are still books though. I'm sure they'll be even better than the show too, as books always are.

Cheers!

I guess I'm an odd man out here, but I hated the TV show. I watched a few episodes on the Sci-Fi channel and thought they were very very bad, at least compared to the books. The deeply engrossing characters, richly-developed world, and intense plots simply could never be brought to the screen. Frankly it appeared the TV show was more "Buffy" and less "Dresden".

I've been reading the books since #6 came out and I saw #1 on the shelf and read it through overnight. I haven't stopped reading them since. I personally hate "sword" fantasy, but this series is simply amazing. Keep up the great work!

I just spent the past month on sick leave. I went to Block Buster and found the first 4 episodes of the Dresden Files. I thoroughly enjoyed them. So I went to the library and found the complete season (all 12 episodes) and loved them. While purchasing the DVD set at Barnes and Noble, I found nine books of the Dresden Files. I definately loved them. Now that I am back to work I looked for them on the SciFi Channel. When I was unable to find them I googled the title and found that the series was cancelled. I am quite disappointed. The actors in the series were excellent. That 1941 Willy's Jeep was put together with lots of love (as a Jeep collector I know how hard it was to get the parts and how expensive). They really made Toronto look like Chicago. Cudos to all the folks involved. I went to a lot of trouble to get the SciFi Channel added to the Cable Packages for all our Fire Stations. I will now have them cancelled. Disappointment is a matter of perspective. Iraq was not enjoyable despite the great work I helped to do with those needy folks there. Afghanistan was a trial as well. The folks there weren't as needy or grateful. Working in Darfur was a low point in Humanitarian Aid. Now that I am retired from those events and back fulltime with the Fire Department, getting shot for the third time was a major disappointment. I look forward to a little escape from reality now and then. Real life can be overwhelming at times. This series was a nice break from it. I'm saddened that the SciFi Channel decided to make another poor judgement in what their viewers would like to see. It just cost them 42 accounts with my department. Jim Butcher, thank you for a nice diversion. I'm now starting your new Caldera series.

Posted by: Fire God at April 5, 2008 02:14 AM

sci-fi channel sucks, "they" would rather run hackneyed re-runs of the twilight zone, then something really new and inventive..."they"are just money grubbers like all the other channels

WHYYYYYYY!! i thought I had to wait a long time for the second season. well to bad I thought it was one of the best shows on T.V. thx

Posted by: Christianne at February 18, 2008 10:40 PM

I watched the shows, though I don't know if I saw them all. I enjoyed them and was unhappy to find they were cancelled. Still that brought me to the books. Read all available in the series, want more.

Posted by: Scott at February 17, 2008 02:34 AM

Hey Jim!
Not sure you read these posts, but was curious if anyone had pitched the idea of doing the series as movies? Perhaps a way to appease fans like myself while waiting for Sci-Fi to realize their ratings just dropped even more? I'm starting a boycott of Sci-Fi with my friends on LJ, and hoping that it shows the execs we want more of TDF!
(Oh, and on a side note, how goes the newest Dresden File?)

Posted by: Dennis at January 22, 2008 04:15 AM

I worked at a used bookstore for many years. Working there I collected a huge amount of books. Harry Dresden was hanging out on my personal 'To Read' shelf (with MANY other series and books) for a few years before I actually watched the TV Show. Once I saw the show, I grabbed it off the shelf and dove into the series. I ended up buying the ones I was missing in a shopping spree because I HAD to know what came next! I can't wait for Small Favors and I am VERY disappointed to discover the SciFi series is cancelled. Why do they have to cancel most of the shows that I like? Eh well. I guess they suppose that WWE wrestling is more than enough scifi for everyone....

Posted by: nia at January 1, 2008 11:07 PM

Jim, I am sorry to hear that Si-Fi Channel canceled the Dresden files. I am reading the book now-real good :)
I hope Alera takes off for you.
Good Luck and Thanks.

I had only just found out about the show which I really enjoyed. Thank god I took the time to download 4 episodes from Itunes.

It really is a shame when a good show gets under promoted and then cancelled due to lack of ratings. If a show is given only a half hearted chance at a long run and then fails to meet it's goals, what's to be expected.

To add insult to injury I then found that the show was no longer available on Itunes which doesn't seem to make sense.

I don't think that I or even most of the best fans of the show are likely to go to the store and buy a boxed set of the dvd's of the series.

BUT, I'll download it in a minute. I don't mind paying for content that I enjoy but now I don't even get the chance.

Ever wonder if anyone in corporate entertainment is listening to the fans?

Posted by: Darvin at December 2, 2007 08:07 PM

What a shame- I finally get cable (at college), and Sci-Fi drops Dresden! :(

I own the DVDs, and I'm still waiting on watching the last one... I'm going to be so sad when there aren't any more!

Posted by: Jenn at November 14, 2007 10:39 AM

Because I'd never read any of the novels, I enjoyed the TV series "The Dresden Files" for what it was, and I liked it a lot. Because of the TV show, I started reading the novels and I've read them all now. I even bought the most recent one in hard cover as soon as it came out. Yes, Harry Dresden in the novels is different in many respects from his television counterpart, but so what?

The TV Harry did enough magic for my tastes and I didn't mind at all the jeep instead of the VW beetle, the hockey stick instead of a wizard's staff and a drumstick for a blasting rod. There was nothing about the TV series I didn't like.

That said, I'm glad the TV series got me to seek out Jim Butcher's novels and I'll continue to read them as they are published.

It is really annoying that the SciFi channel killed the TV series. It was a very good thing and I was so looking forward to more of it. Grrrr!

Posted by: toddabearsf at November 5, 2007 02:50 PM

I was curious why sci-fi is taking so long to show the next season of "The Dresden Filles", but it was 'til yesterday that I found out , "why?" And it's ashame that it was cancelled because of the low ratings. I'm sorry for the show 'cause I was a big fan, and I think that sci-fi was wrong to take away "Dresden Files" from the people that use to love the show so much!

Posted by: Judith C. at October 22, 2007 05:18 PM

Addition to my last post: The Dresden Files might make an interesting series of animated shorts, somewhere in the lines of "Sin City" (with perhaps a little less violence, heh), "Renaissance", and the like. Just throwin' that thought out there...

Posted by: Jeff at October 14, 2007 11:38 PM

I have greatly enjoyed (and will continue to enjoy) the works and miracles of Jim Butcher, but while I am saddened at the show's canceling, I felt that the story, characters, and plots of the episodes were just different enough from the books to make me feel that, had this show operated independently from any book, and thusly remained unbound by reader expectations, it could have flourished for several more seasons. That said, I mean no criticism to anyone involved in the show and its unfortunate demise. Perhaps, in time, Sci Fi or another network will be ready to try again...

Posted by: Jeff at October 14, 2007 11:31 PM

IT IS A ABSOLUTE SHAME THAT THIS SHOW IS BEING CANCELLED IT WAS SIMPLY THE BEST DAMN SHOW SCI-FI HAS HAD IN A LONG TIME, TOTALLY, ABSOLUTLY LOVED EVERY MINUTE OF IT AND IM SAD TO SEE IT GO. SCI-FI EXECS NEED TO SMARTIN' UP DUE TO THE FACT THAT THEY HAD THE SHOW AIRING ON SUNDAY EVENINGS AS OPPOSED TO AFTER SG1-ATLANTIS WHERE IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN OR ON NORMAL BIG SHOW DATES SUCH AS TUES, OR THURS PRIMETIME IS WHAT REALLY CAUSED THE RATINGS TO BE NOT AS HOT. AND TO THINK THAT NOW THAT SG-1 IS OVER IM STUCK WITH ATLANTIS AND THE WEAK A$$ BATTLESTAR GALLATICA ON MY SCI-FRI'S IS STOMACH TURNING AND IM NOT GOING TO MENTION THE WEAKEST SHOW EVER PAINKILLER JANE(DANG I JUST DID), WELL ANYWAY LETS SEE HOW THERE RATINGS FAIR NOW. WORDS FROM A TRUE FAN PEACE!!!

I first heard of Harry Dresden with the previews for the TV show. My husband and I enjoyed the show and were craving more Dresden once the season was over. Bless my husband for checking into the books. He laughs at me now, because every new book in the series is "the best Dresden book - EVER!!!" They definitely get better as the series goes on - partially the writing style, but more-so because of the characters, and the references back to other situations in previous books. Although the books are very careful to give the basic intros to all the characters (in case someone comes in starting with a book other than the first one), the nuances to other plots is facinating and makes the read much better. While I'll miss the TV show, after reading the books, what I'd really like to see is a TV show that REALLY depicts the characters and stories from the books. Thank you and keep up the good work!

Posted by: Carlotta at October 13, 2007 11:27 PM

Just got DVD. Heard it had the original 2-hour Storm Front Pilot but it's not there, just the 44 minute version aired on TV. I'm a little disappointed, but it's to have the whole run since it probably won't be broadcast anywhere else.

Posted by: Rich & Julie Meierdirks at October 3, 2007 09:03 PM

I got into the book series after watching the tv series. The book series is much better, though the tv series was good too. One of the things that really stands out on the tv series is that there was very few instances where Harry ever really did any magic. The tv series was simplistic compared to the books.
I think the books would be better deplicted in anime or american animation, something like the old Spawn series on HBO. It could stick closer to the plots laid out in the books and actually show Harry using fire magic and such without having to have a hugh special effects budget.

Posted by: Rob at September 30, 2007 12:00 AM

Somehow, the TV series lacked the spark that the books had; While I got the reasons for some of the changes, the lack of some essential plot points made it come off a bit dull at times. I could really have done with them sticking just a little closer to the plots of the books, if not the details of the characterization (not too fussed about jeep versus VW bug, but the utter lack of the sword of Damocles made the show seem a little washed-out to me.

Posted by: wench at September 24, 2007 10:40 PM

I love the books and enjoyed the TV series. I had hoped the Sci-fi channel would pick it back up, especially after having watched "Flash Gordon". I can't believe they decided to do that show and not keep "the Dresden Files".

Posted by: Ben at September 24, 2007 07:38 PM

My dad gave me the books recently because he'd seen the show and read them afterwards. I was really excited to learn that the show was coming out on DVD (I don't have cable) and rushed to rent it. I was very disappointed. They ignored everything that made the books fun to read; the smart-ass cracks, the romance, Bob, the adventures in general. I got through 3 episodes I think and couldn't watch any more. Jim, I think your books are fantastic! My fiance wants to be Harry for Halloween (I'm working on putting a costume together). :o) That said, I cannot say I'm sorry to see the show go, hopefully someday, somewhere, someone will make a better one. This is my new favorite series of books, please keep it up! (btw, if you ever want someone to make a computer animated series, please keep us in mind, my fiance is going to school to be an animator! He was even talking about possibly doing a 5 minute short for his portfolio.)

Posted by: Abby at September 22, 2007 03:46 PM

While admittedly not the books in any form, i found the series to be and enjoyable watch. Yes, they ignored many of the parts that made the books great, but if you look at the series in the same way as an alternate reality of the same character, it actually becomes as entertaining seeing the slightly different personality. And after all, we are watching and reading science fiction, so how big of a stretch is it to do that?

Posted by: Tyrel at September 18, 2007 09:13 PM

Loved the books, series made me love reading again after quite a few years, my book collection has grown by a large amount due to the Dresden Files, which I happened to find by watching the series. Enjoyed the TV series but prefer the books personally, that said I hate the fact they cancelled the TV series.
Long live Jim Butcher
P.S I love the Codex Alera series so far.

Posted by: adam_ae at September 17, 2007 12:40 AM

Never heard of Jim Butcher until I watched the "Dresden Files". I look forward to reading the books now.

Sorry the show was cancelled.

Posted by: C. Gonzalez at September 16, 2007 10:01 PM

I loved Bob on TDF. He was my favorite. I got into the Files because I got a kick out of comparing what I normally do (I am a witch)with the series. I have all the books, the dvd etc. Did they film more and it is in a can somewhere. Can they release those on dvd? I got angry when the canceleld Farscape also. I guess if you get continued as a series on that channel that is a sign you are a really shitty production. I mean really look at Flash Gordon. Well I love the books and I miss my Bob fix. I have memorized the whole dvd series dialog. LOL Ok I am a Jim Butcher junky.

Posted by: Witchywoman at September 14, 2007 04:15 PM

I tend to watch a lot of movies, and my local blockbuster is pretty picked through. Sometimes I have to look at items that are hiding low on the bottom shelf. There I found the first of the Dresden files.

I love magic, wizardry and such and this fit my genre to a T. Before I had finished watching the first DVD, I ran back to the store before they closed so I could get the 2nd and the 3rd.

The actors are perfect in their portrayals and my complete satisfaction with this story line was only deflated by the fact there are no more.

I don't watch TV normally, and Sci Fi channel is well known for seemingly taking portions of available material and never exploiting excellent product. It was nice to see Lions Gate on the logo credits, it gives credibility to movies imho.

Time to go find the books!

Posted by: Jim at September 13, 2007 06:47 PM

Very disappointed to hear this!! It (and BG) was the only reason I watched the sci-fi channel. I'm really surprise to see it canceled.

Posted by: David at September 10, 2007 12:50 PM

I loved the series, and am sorry it got canned. Why is it all the good tv gets canceled? Sheesh.
Love Dresden, books, tv, movies whatever...

Posted by: Cindy at September 9, 2007 06:41 PM

I think the reason they cancled the show was it takes only one third the money to make their "sci-fi orignal movies" than it does to make an episode of a good series like TDF, SG-1, or any other canxed series. I am glad that they made it because of it I have read all the books and am now finishing up Cursors Fury. So Jim keep writing and we'll keep reading.

Posted by: aaron at September 9, 2007 06:05 AM

I'm sad that the series got cancelled.

Sure, it wasn't quite like the books but the odd line Paul delivered was Harry. I grew to really like the show and I was looking forward to the TV versions of Mouse and Thomas!

They ran it on Sky One here ...I wonder if the ratings were higher?

My Partner just bought me the series on DVD for my birthday so at least I can now watch it in the correct order.

Can't wait for Small Favour! [Please excuse my UK spelling, old habits etc..]

My thanks to Mr Butcher for such rich world in the Dresden files.

Posted by: Emberhi at September 8, 2007 05:29 PM

I am not surprised that Sci Fi cancelled the show. On the whole, it was enjoyable. While it didn't quite come up to the level I had been hoping for - it would have been nice if they could have come closer to the actual spirit of the novels - it had a life of its own that could have developed nicely if given the chance. However I expect nothing from Sci Fi except disappointment. I have not watched the channel since they cancelled Farscape, which is my favorite science fiction show of all time.

Thanks a lot for Harry and company, Mr. Butcher! I have been a reader since the publication of Storm Front and will continue to read both the Dresden Files and the Alera Codex as long as you continue to challenge yourself and your characters!

Posted by: Shymsal at September 7, 2007 12:33 PM

Firefly only did the 12 episode first season as well before being canned for quote, "lack of interested viewers", end quote, but demand still grew enough over the next 2 or 3 years to get them to make a movie for it. Hopefully, the same thing will happen to the dresden files.

Posted by: Nick at September 7, 2007 03:55 AM

I hope someone can develop an internet-based "network" that will take on shows like the Dresden files. The show has a lot of fans, but apparently not enough to keep the network happy. I'd do pay-per-view to see a show I really like.

Posted by: Sybil at September 6, 2007 12:33 PM

PS You actually CAN e-mail the SciFi channel at feedback@scifi.com. I did and gave them an ear-full! LOL

Posted by: Roxanne at September 5, 2007 07:16 PM

Guess I'm slow on the uptake... Just recently discovered they canceled the only show I looked forward to each week! As you've all said, at least Jim Butcher is still there so that Harry can carry on. Thanks, Jim... Your books are spectacular!

Posted by: Roxanne at September 5, 2007 05:56 PM

Sorry to hear the show got canceled. I'm a sucker for these little niche series and I thought this one had pretty much everything I was looking for. The writing and the acting were top notch, production values were excellent, and most of all we fell in love with the characters. I don't think it's a coincidence that the major networks are trying supernatural series this fall. I think that Harry Dresden showed them that a supernatural series can have the potential for excellent programming.

Divorced from knowledge of the book series, I have to say that I didn't really see anything wrong with the television series. It was spot on, telling a great story every week. The Philip Marlowe radio series didn't follow the book series, but both were still great without detracting from each other. I think the same is true of The Dresden Files.

Posted by: Clay Dowling at September 5, 2007 02:20 PM

Reflecting on this a month later, I think it's more evidence that GE doesn't really have a plan for how it manages NBC/Universal. Ever since the days George Lucas first brought us Star Wars - and probably further back to Siegel and Shuster - the entertainment concept was a franchise, that could be developed into a narrative (comic books or paperback), then with a radio serial (showing my age, here) or a television programme, eventually graduating to the silver screen, and in today's world, the video game franchise. Lucas' Star Wars clearly is master of its many domains, but other much more recent additions would have to include J.K. Rowling's work, the Matrix franchise, and many others.

Clearly, the Dresden Files has all the buzz of a very workable franchise - however Jim wishes to develop it. Sci Fi was clearly in the catbird seat, able through NBC/Universal's arms to option films, authorize comic materials, and look at gaming. Perhaps it was because GE doesn't really own a publishing division that it didn't see the value in developing the show (or perhaps it was because it sees Pearson Plc as too much a rival), but now the same tired formula seems to be premiering a series on Sci Fi, moving it to Sleuth, and then finally sending to Chiller.

Related to Dresden, the cancellation of Painkiller Jane, while perhaps not quite as well-developed as Dresden Files, marks another questionable move by Sci Fi to drop a potential franchise, to attempt to resurrect an old one - Flash Gordon. One wonders how long this has been in the making - at least a few years, I should guess - but I wonder if NBC/Universal will be doing any better with Hearst Corporation than it did with Pearson (Jim's de facto boss, as it owns the Roc imprint).

Regardless, we can all only hope Jim has ridden the Sci Fi wave as far as he could with enjoyment, and I for one am eagerly waiting for him to be chained back at his desk and give us new Harry Dresden stories to read. In the meantime, there's this Codex thing I've been meaning to get to ...

Posted by: Tito at September 4, 2007 02:02 PM

I'm sad the show was canceled but glad that it was on at all as it led me to the Dresden files books. This is the best series I've read in a while. I am only at book four but loving every minute. Sci Fi channel should have given the show a chance to grow. You could see that the potential was there for it to become a really great show.

Posted by: Suzanne at September 3, 2007 09:52 PM

Color me late, I just learned of the shows cancellation and I have to say that I am surprised and then not so surprised.

Surprised because I wanted the show to have legs and find its pace in the second season. I think it really could have.

Not so surprised because this is the Sci-Fi Channel folks, and obviously they would rather toss money into their craptacular DVD movie of the week "Giagantor Ice Spiders From Mars" than actually produce quality television.

To hell with the Sci Fi Channel I say! Surprised we're even getting one last year of BSG. To think Sci-Fi picked up Flash Gordon over the possibility of Caprica. Idiots! Once BSG is gone I take it the Sci-Fi Channel landscape will be a very bleak one indeed.

Lastly, I was also one who picked up the book series once I heard that the show was going to be made. I have read the first seven and dearly enjoy the hell out of them. Thank you Jim Butcher!

Long Live The Dresden!

NOOOOOOOO! That's it. I am smashing my TV and becoming a hermit.

I am not surprised Scifi canceled The Dresden Files, they cancel all the good stuff, and keep the crap. The show wasn't perfect, but I was enjoying it, damn it. This show also led me to reading the books. At least we still have those to look forward to.

Well, another loss for the home team, this show had a class all its own, sure the books are better,
but what next?
now the big 4 are trying sci-fi, a vampire cop? bionic woman? been there watched that, and if they dont improve flash gordan we will be stuch with that for years

Though I understand that many of our fellow readers were not so happy about how much the TV series diviated from the original books, I sincerely appreciate that the TV series motivated me to finish all 9 books during this summer as my summer reading project; I wanted to know how the original influenced the TV series. I would never touched the live of Harry D. if the show was never aired....I wish I could see more development of the TV version...

Its unfortunate that sci-fi canx the show, although it did differ from the books, it had its own charm, and like alot of people here have already mentioned, if it wasnt for the show I wouldnt have read all the books thusfar. So to those asshats at sci-fi, I hope you got your taste of the Harry Dresden death curse. Kerbloowie!

Posted by: Greg at August 28, 2007 02:35 PM

Well, I've been a Dresden fan since book two, which I picked up, along with its prequel, after hearing that Butcher lived in OK and had the same Journalism Prof as I did. I love the stories, and I'm bummed that the show isn't being renewed.
Of course, I was kinda bummed that the show had departed so far from the books to begin with, but I got over it.
Guess I'll get over this by looking forward to the next book.

Sci-fi screwed up cancelling this... Best show on tv.

Posted by: Marty at August 25, 2007 11:55 PM

i am glad the series aired on scifi(even for just one season)! now i am reading the books, probably would have never heard of harry dresden if it wasnt for the tv show.

Posted by: ewkp at August 25, 2007 06:15 PM

I am so glad they aired the show ... it was by far my favorite. Someone please tell me why the Sci Fi channel descided to cancel the show! What in God's name were they thinking! The best show out there and they decide to cancel it! They will never find a show it replace it ... after all what are they going to replace it with Flash Gordon ...that show SUCKS! Sci Fi REALLY needs to reconsider. I wonder if we can send a message to Sci Fi channel? Well ... at least we had a full season. I bought it as soon as it came out. I can honestly say ... I'm hooked on Harry!

Posted by: Maurice at August 25, 2007 04:02 PM

Although, the thought of a TV series was exciting, I was really disappointed in it, the books are just so much better!

Posted by: Ashten at August 25, 2007 04:51 AM

SciFi Channel is really being run in to the ground. They cancel great shows like Stargate SG-1, Dresden Files, and Battlestar Galactica (next season is the last). And then offer us dreck like Painkiller Jane and Flash Gordon. It's like someone over at SciFi is purposely trying to destroy the channel. It's nuts.

Posted by: Harrison Bergeron at August 25, 2007 04:45 AM

This is really sad that such a good show gets cancelled! What's up with this Sci-Fi?

Posted by: Jadecourt at August 24, 2007 03:01 PM

While I am sad that the show was canceled, I'm glad that it aired at all. Before the show, I had never heard of Jim Butcher or Harry Dresden. I love book series as much as I love good series TV and I'm hooked on Harry. Almost as soon as the season ended, I bought the first 6 books and dug in. I've already shared the books with a number of friends and look forward to enjoying the continuing saga of Harry. While USA is not a Sci Fi channel by any stretch, maybe Dresden could find a home there, since Harry is clearly a "character". If the "Dead Zone" can survive on USA, maybe Harry can too. If not, I hope Jim keeps the books coming.

Posted by: Tony at August 24, 2007 03:01 PM

This really bites! I became a fan of the Dresden Files when the display first went up at work (Barnes and Nobles) months before the series was on SciFi. I was hooked instantly!

Then when I found out their was going to be a show on SciFi, I almost wet myself.

Now I'm just pissed because, once again, SciFi had to make the dumbest mistake in the world and cancel it! The show was really getting great! I would actually find ways to get off of work early on Sundays so I could come home and watch it! Now I don't have Dresden Files AND a job! Thanks SciFi! For screwing over my life.

On a more positive note, the books are still incredible and I'm going to buy the ones that are coming out in hardback too! Then I'll probably have three sets of the books. Older covers, newer covers and the hardbacks!

P.S. Now we won't get to see who they would've casted for Michael..... or Thomas........... OR KINCAID!!!!!!!! UGH! THANKS AGAIN SCIFI!!!!!!!!! *note sarcasm*

just started to read the books when show got cancelled, i never saw the show but wanted to. oh well ill just watch reruns or buy it of itunes or something

Posted by: Henry at August 22, 2007 07:10 PM

It is nice to know that the SCiFi channel is no longer second fiddle to any of the big 4 (Fox, CBS, NBC and ABC) and is cancelling shows that don't need cancelling and are bringing us shows that should never have aired.

While I believe the Dresden Files books are far superior to the show (who cast those people and who wrote the early scripts?), I think the show earned the right to a second season. It was coming into its own and it was definitely far superior to Wrestling (how is is this SCIFi? Oh, yea make believe) and some of the idiotic movies that are telecast (How can Misery be classifed as SciFi--what next Pee Wee's playhouse?). Of course, what can you expect from a channel that cancelled FireFly and refused to bring it back (even though there was a huge fan outcry) and refused to renew Stargate SG-1?

And what is that crap they are forcing us to watch now? My God they destroyed Flash Gordon. And Pain killer Jane (where is wrestling when you need it?)just bites--I actually fall asleep during the show. We also have Destination Truth(is he going to find anything?), Ghost Hunters (are they going to find anything anymore?--rasping thump nosies don't do it for me anymore and I don't care about their staff's perosnal problems anymore--give me ghosts or get off my TV)and aniMonday (aren't cartoons for Saturday am?).

The Dresden Files show decided to distance it self from the books which probably cost it at the beginning as did the miscasting of Harry Dresden (nice guy, but not at all what we expected) and some early weak scripts, but the show was defintely improving and Mr. Blackstone started making the charater really work. If Who Wants to Be A Superhero got a second season, why not the Dresden Files?

I hope they (SCI FI) gets a clue because I don't think another network will pick up the show.

Posted by: Allen at August 22, 2007 03:44 PM

The books rule...if there was a patron saint of dirty angels, I think it would be Harry Dresden. I guess it was too much to hope that a show that (while not as eloquently and with quite a few trade offs from the book) portrayed folks that beleive in things that go bump in the night as something more than camp, or straining against their babydoll tee breathless waifs. I guess the world is more comfortable with shiny boys and girls that men and women sized people

Posted by: Justin at August 22, 2007 01:42 PM

wow.. Dresden Files was the only show I gave a damn about and then they cancel it.. I guess it wasnt over the top cheesy enough for them.. Maybe you should've introduced some characters with a forehead shaped like an anus or something... :P

Sci-Fi can officially lick 'em!

Posted by: Brandon at August 21, 2007 05:21 PM

NOOOOOOOOOO! I can't believe they aren't going to give us more eps of Dresden and we have to suffer through the travesty they've made of Flash Gordon! WHAT ARE THEY THINKING!?

Posted by: Sharon at August 21, 2007 04:45 PM

I saw this Dvd in the Blockbuster store, and it look interesting, so I rented it. Started watching and got hook. I just got done watching 12 episode and got on the internet to find out when second season started, very displeased, to find out it was cancel. Its hard to9 find Tv series today very interesting, than some show with complete sex and drugs. Maybe, if this show was release on regular Tv it might have done better, I'm not a sci-fi wathcer so I was aware of it. Hopefully it will come back..

And last is there last show finale and can you rent it.

Posted by: rick at August 20, 2007 01:32 PM

I have been waiting all summer to see if the show would be renewed and now to find out that Sci-Fi has cancelled the show only to bring in something like Flash Gorden...really ticks me off. I am getting so tired of the networks introduceing a show only to pull it if the numbers are not there in the first few episodes. I'm sure that if the show had been given a chance to come back the numbers would have been alot higher and the show would have only gotten better. I will really miss not getting a chance to see how the show could have played out; but at least I still have the books. Who knows maybe we will get lucky and another network will give Dresden another chance.

Posted by: Lara at August 20, 2007 11:08 AM

I lost my cable TV right about the time the show premiered. So I didn't see them, but when the DVD came out I thought what the heck, and bought it. I wasnt thrilled with the first couple of episodes but stuck with it. By the second disc I was in love and finished the rest with a day! After watching them I went online to find out the show was no more, so I wrote SciFi and told them were to stick it, then I found out about the books and I've ordered the first two from Amazon. I haven't read them yet but I read the first chapter here on the site and can't wait till the books get here. I like the characters and find them very original. I hope that another network espresses interest in picking up the show!I love the show and I'm sure I'll love the books!

We'll be sad to see it go.

I'm one of the "Discovered the books thru the TV show"s as well. And at first I wasn't even that interested. Thank God I tivoed it to give it a chance.

Even thou I am saddened by the lose of another great show I can say I'm surprised. It was too original and quirky for the typical "feed me standard pap" audience.

And now Sci Fi channel joins Fox in that heady realm, that Celestial high of . . . if the CEO can't figure it out, it can't be that good and what do those peons on the Web know" Club.

Space: Above and Beyond, better than any Star Drek, but the heroes didn't talk, they fought, so cancelled.

Firefly, my God, the actually Wagon Train in the stars that Roddenberry spouted about. Cancelled.

Strange Luck, strange but good show. Cancelled.

But lets look at what we are being offered now, Kid Nation, Dancing shows, Temptation Islands, makeover house, kid, lawn, or the dog shows, Survivor. . . who knows where now...Boise?
And oh yes, that seminal work of genius...suburban cavemen . . . is suicide still considered a mortal sin? Cuase I gotta be honest with you, given the choice between the new fall line up and Eternal Damnation . . . I'm not really seeing the difference. Well I'm sure whatever else they inflict opn us this season, there will be enough big fake boobs (as seen on a very special Flip this Torso) to make even Bob a happy air spirit.

All I can say is Jim, thank you for writting a great series of books. In fact, a friend of mine said he was a fan of the show, I told him all about your books and I know you'll have another fan.

Posted by: Beohun72 at August 18, 2007 04:11 PM

I discovered Dresden before the TV show came out. And as much as I enjoyed the 12 eps we did get, I do feel in all honesty that it didn't do Jim's work full justice. Keep up the great work Jim.... we really love it!

Posted by: Yoli at August 18, 2007 09:41 AM

I found Harry ,and by extension, Jim Butcher, through The Dresden Files on SciFi. Fell in love with both the series and the books. My girls and I have acquired and read all The Dresden books, and my youngest and I have read the Alera series books.
I am totally miffed at SciFi. First they dump Farscape, then Stargate SG-1(my personal favorite), then TPTB obliterate The Dresden Files after one season. Just when it was hitting its stride.... Hate SciFi and the drivel they are currently producing( Painkiller Jane and Flash Gordon--and wrestling?!).
Keep writing, Jim, and we will keep reading. (Maybe a movie of HD?)

Posted by: Naj at August 17, 2007 11:11 AM

My boyfriend begged me to watch the series on SciFi, I think it was ep.2 -I was less than impressed; as many have said before, it was weak. But I kept watching and it got better. I always watch tv with a laptop, so I was thrilled to google dresden and discover the books.

At the time we were planning our vacation to Jamaica and boyfriend ordered the books from Amazon. We planned a do-absolutely-nothing vacation -eat, drink swim and read, so we only took the first 2 books and were finished by mid week... regretted not taking all. We snorkeled, drank and talked about the books. It was really nice, my boyfriend usually spends 4-5 hours gaming nightly, now we actually read together.

So keep writing and I'm sorry you won't get the well-deserved royalties from future tv but it was the writer's fault -they should have stuck to your books! They certainly had at least ten years of episodes... each book has several.

Movie is a very good idea if Jim Butcher does the screenplay!

Posted by: Cris at August 16, 2007 06:13 AM

I don't have cabletv or satellite service, so I only had the chance to see the premiere episode by hijacking my nephew's tv.

As someone noted above, the series started out (very, IMO) weak. It was so ho-hum that I wasn't going to drive 20 minutes and hijack the tv to keep watching it. Just recently though, I had the chance to do a series-on-dvd marathon, which inspired a couple'r three observations:

The writers seemed to be trying too hard to make the series a separate creature from the series of books. Rather like using the books as a jumping-off point to take the (tv) series (and characters) where ever they felt like. I understand that any book-to-film adaptation has to make compromises, but in the first few episodes the tv-Harry felt nothing like the book-Harry (no insult to Paul Blackthorne - I think he did quite well.)

As the series progressed, I began to recognize storylines that had appeared in the books, and those episodes were better and better. I say that, not as a purist of the books' storylines, but as someone who works at 'a major national video rental chain' and watches a buttload of commercial entertainment fare. My personal standards for 'quality' are, basically, "There's two hours of my life I won't get back.", "It didn't suck.", "It was good, but I'm glad I didn't pay theatre ticket prices for it.", "Very good, if you like that sort of thing.", "It rocks, hard.", and "Buy it, now." By the last two or three episodes, I was already aware that I would soon run out of Dresden.

I'm giving the box-set (if it were to happen) a qualified 'Buy it' recommendation, depending on price, with a 'first half is kinda weak' caveat. Not bad, per se, but not appointment tv, either. If the entire series were as good as the second half, I'd be after it harder than a high-school junior looking for their second orgasm.

A few quibbles, though -

Teenaged Harry would maybe have used drum and hockey sticks, for adult Harry to use them is just hockey. Harry is unapologetically a Wizard, not some kid playing pretend.

Harry is always flirting with dead-broke, he lives in a basement, not a 4,000 square foot townhouse filled with more crap than the Smithsonian.

A Jeep??!?!?!?!?!! (At least it was WWI era.) There was a late-series nod to the blue Beetle. It was up on a lift, and it was (sky) blue with airbrushed trim around all the seams. But it wasn't all banged-up with different color body panels. It was shiny.

As for resurrecting the series, it'll take a lot of noise from the fans. My feeling is that right now only independent filmmakers are in it to tell a story. Studios and distributors primary interest is about payday.

Posted by: ColdWinterWind at August 15, 2007 03:03 AM

But they're bringing on this crap "Flash Gordon" show?

*sigh* Ah well. It was fun. I wish I got a chance to see where it was going. Honestly, though, it started weak, and rather confused.

Posted by: Josh Jasper at August 14, 2007 05:51 PM

Thanks for the confirmation. We have been watching the re-runs awaiting news. As well as being a great TV adaptation of one of my favourite characters, it was also the only time our
whole family... kids and all... would get together.

I have the DVD's already. They will go up on the shelf beside Firefly...

Perhaps we will see another incarnation sometime.

To learn that Dresden files has been cancelled is very sad to me. This was one of the few shows I actually looked forward to this fall. How is it so many bad or mediocre shows will make it to tv again and something so well done on all levels will not. Again, the people in charge can't seem to make choices between what is good and what isn't.

Posted by: Mary Ann Webster at August 13, 2007 03:42 PM

What can I say that everyone else hasn't. The books are fantastic! The show was great! It was one thing that my wife and I could actually agree on when it came to television viewing. TDF was my candle in the darkness that is HGTV. Oh yes, I almost forgot, SciFi Channel has become a joke, and man did they drop the ball on this one. Thanks alot fellas. :(

Another discovered the Books thru the series. I alway tell folk to see the movie first then read the book. I enjoyed the series, wish it was continuing, but I can also see what the purist object to. (Personally I alway see someone with the physical build of Jimmy Steward as Harry when I read the books.

I have devoured all the Dresden books in paperback (hardb bounds don't fit on my bookselves) and have taken up duel citizenship in Alera.

Keep writing Jim. I love the creativity of your mind.

I was soooooo, looking forward to a new season, I was going to purchase the channel myself just to watch it. I bought the DVD that is out but I want more. Honestly though, I dug the show but I love the books more. Maybe it would go as a movie. Keep up the good work Jim. I will try your other books as well.

I'm so sorry the series got canceled...I've been waiting all summer for fall so I could see my favorite series again, and, as usual, it gets canceled. I had hoped we would be able to revive the show with a petition but if Paul has already signed on to another show then I seriously doubt any network would take it. I'm not the type to get a "crush" on a television character, but he brought a charisma to the role that carried the show. I'll keep reading the books and preaching the "Gospel of Jim Butcher". Keep up the good work and, believe me, SciFi is making a mistake they will greatly regret...I only watch them now for X-files reruns...but think I'll even stop now. They once offered true science fiction...but now their programming is more akin to stupid horror than SciFi. Keep your chin up, Jim!

Posted by: AngiS at August 12, 2007 01:12 AM

The TV series introduced me to the world of Jim Butcher's Dresden Files books and for that I will be forever grateful, when will the next book hit the shelves?

As for wrestling on SciFi... that almost makes me shiver as much as the number of shows that died out during the reality TV revolution and decent into ghastly television.

Posted by: Thurstan Davies at August 11, 2007 05:28 AM

I've been a fan of the Dresden books since shortly after the first one hit the shelves. I also loved the show. The differences between the book and the tv show I find to be interesting variations. Anyway, I hope/wish the show gets shopped to another network although how well it would work without Blackthorne is an open question.

I am soooo very bummed! I really loved the show and was really looking forward to a new season. But as long as the books keep coming then i will be happy. I was done with the last one in two days and am going to re-read it soon. BOOOO to Sci Fi for getting rid of all the good shows.

Posted by: Mona at August 9, 2007 07:00 PM

The show served its purpose. It introduced me to a new character and series (of books) that I immediately purchased and devoured like a phobophage. I was just thinking that Harry Dresden should be on the big screen (with bigger and better monsters and landscapes). My vote = Christian Bale.

Posted by: Suilebhain at August 9, 2007 01:34 PM

Darn, I liked the series. It served its (larger) purpose, turning me on to a great writer who lives in MY HOME TOWN! (Go Independence!)

I don't get it. SciFi's "homemade movies" are awful, yet they keep airing them. And I can't boycott the only source of Doctor Who (BBC America is a season behind).

While the series lacked a dimension that the novels have, I have to give credit - Bob's personality was "spot on" even if they mucked with his "essence."

Jim, take heart. You've gained a loyal following.

Posted by: Kevin at August 9, 2007 10:06 AM

Even though it strayed a lot from the books (and would have been so much better if it hadn't), it still was an interesting show. Sci-Fi is so untrusting of their shows for some reason. And it seems they only like continuing their bad shows. I was worried they were going to cancel Eureka (the only show they have now) until I heard the second season announced. Normally, when you watch the first season of a good show, you don't have to worry so much about it coming back. However, with SciFi, you have to worry immensely about it. You never know if they'll cancel it and replace it with wrestling.

This would work a lot better on USA. Their tv shows are excellent these days. It's a shame that other networks can't learn from USA or FX. Dresden would have been a great character on show for USA network - especially if he was brought straight from the book.

This would most definitely work as an animated series of movies.

If someone had the resources to even allow an independent-movement to bring it to an animated movie dvd, i'm sure a huge percentage of your readers would purchase it.

Posted by: Paul at August 9, 2007 08:59 AM

So much for the So-Called-Sci-Fi Channel... this is my last straw. They cancel wonderful sci/fi fantasy shows (Farscape, SG-1, and now Dresden Files), they refuse to rescue unfairly-cancelled series (Firefly, Angel, the Lone Gunmen) and choose instead to air completely crappy TV-movies or WRESTLING, for Bob's sake--since when is wrestling even *remotely* related to sci-fi?!?!? I was semi-interested in Flash Gordon, but forget it. No Dresden, no So-Called-Sci-Fi!!!

While I must admit to being... underwhelmed by the series, I have to admit it still had possibilities and Paul Blackthorne was a great choice for Harry. I'd hoped for more development in season 2... oh well. If someone could post save-TDF-sites, I'll sign up for them. I'm ready to fight the good fight, both here and in the bookstore where I work. (I've converted one of my co-workers already, and we're promoting the books as fast as we can!)

Posted by: CrusherJen at August 9, 2007 02:40 AM

I just have to add my two cents worth to the many others who have posted. I'm no "kid", but I have been a devout SF?Fantasy fan since I was a "kid".
Having been a BTVS fan as well, my intro to Jim's books came through the purchase of the Storm Front audio book read by James Marsters. From then on I was on a roll! Love the books!
I have purchased, read and reread, all the books, including the Codex Alera series, and all the audio books to date. Jim is my favorite author; #1 on my list of favorites. I too was a bit put off by the tv show writing and casting....(Murphy is a short blonde!) but like others have said , the TV show was better than nothing, and YES, the Sci Fi Channel has missed the boat on this one. It definitely would be nice to have the cinematic powers that be recognize Jim Butcher's talent and marvelous characters someday. If Harry Potter can do it, why not Harry Dresden?! Here's hoping! Keep up the good work Jim! Stupidity in the television industry can't keep a good writer down. You have all your loyal fans, including me, cheering you on!

A major problem with Sci-Fi and the Dresden Lite they produced is that every one is either all good or all bad people all problems a hero faces must end in 50 minutes. Other shows on cable THE CLOSER, THE SHEILD, SAVING GRACE show flaws in heros and redemptive quality in baddies. It's time we fans of fiction quit accepting the crap from sci-fi as "well its better than nothing"

Posted by: steven kivel at August 8, 2007 05:45 PM

As a published fantasy author, I thuroughly enjoy every one of the Dresden books. Harry Dresden, to me, is a sort of Archie Goodwin/Garrett/Sam Spade with the added spice of wizard mixed in for flavor. Of course the sci fi channel blew it when they allowed the writers to change the characterizations to the point where they only had the names for identification. The management of that channel doesn't even like sci fi much less fantasy. This is the channel that canceled Firefly for Ghu's sake. The problem is, a template has been set and it will take a tremendous amount of capital and guts to reestablish DF as a series on another network. I would love to see it on a network that actually shows some respect to its viewers such as USA

Posted by: Bob Beers at August 8, 2007 03:27 PM

I'm a huge fan of the books.

I couldn't stand the TV series, because the changes were just too big.

I'm sad that your loosing your TV show, and everything that comes with that, but at the same time, I'm glad, because I kind of felt that it hurt the series.

The breaking point for me was the second episode I watched, the one with the were-wolves. Where-in they firmly established that they didn't care at all about anything that was established in the books.

"What, there's already a Dresden Files book about werewolves? Well we don't need to read the book, I've seen Teen-Wolf and The Howling a dozen times. I see no problem using THOSE as source material instead..."

Posted by: Tiwaz at August 8, 2007 12:21 PM

I am one of those who found out about the books because of the TV show - I agree with most that the books are far better, but the show was good - certainly far better than any one of the endless litany of terrible "sci-fi channel original movies" they've assaulted viewers with over the years.

I agree also with what someone else said elsewhere -Dresden Files is a show for USA, where the moto is "Characters Welcome". The Dresden files could take it's place there with Monk, The Dead Zone, Psyched, and Burn Notice, some of the best shows on TV.

Screw the Sci-Fi Channel. It's a miracle they haven't folded and if they keep going like they are, they will.

Posted by: Matt Walker at August 7, 2007 10:04 PM

I am sorry to see Dresden Files the TV series go off the air. BUT I agree with all the lovers of the books who say they strayed to far from the books. i have called it DRESDEN LITE I believe a new Dresden series either on the web or as a series of movies on TNT or FX channels that aren't afraid of showing Humans and thier flaws and leave SCI FI to man-squito and the offensive (KILLER JANE)
I believe there is a viusal media future for Dresden it's just finding it

Posted by: steven kivel at August 7, 2007 09:55 PM

I am disappointed that SCIFI chose to cancel the series. I have very little time to watch television, and TDF was the only show I watched regularly. I started reading the books because of the show and have thoroughly enjoyed each one. Jim, thank you for all the hard work and the labour of love you put into each book.

Posted by: cindy aka at August 7, 2007 09:40 AM

It is a shame that the Dresden Show was canceled; it had so much potential. Perhaps if they did stay truer to the book it may have had a better chance for a 2nd season. Who knows?

But isn't this the typical route on all interesting shows that challenge and excite the audience? Think of all the shows that have been canceled prematurely because it seemed so unlikely? Doe, Firefly, Tru Calling...the list goes on.

They Executives at Sci-Fi may have over-done it with all the new line-ups for the fall and couldn't slot Dresden in because they chose Eureka instead. We will never really understand their decision.

As for a movie, perhaps if it was made for TV and not the big screen. Must I remind you of Serenity? (Not bad, but it needed more, it felt rushed.) I think of the Tanya Huff Books-to-TV. They were decent; a little off from the books but updated nicely and it wasn't rushed. I hate being rushed through something; that's why books are so much better.

As long as Jim keeps the books coming, I'm a happy camper. Plus there is Shannon's book too. The only good thing from all this is TV Harry was a lot yummier then my book version of Harry.

I wish they hadn't cancelled the series...but totally revamped it to make Harry Dresden like he really is in the book...if his character and surroundings would have been more like the book character the show would have lasted. People like heroes with flaws...and the TV Dresden didn't have flaws like the book Harry does. Either way the books are amazing and I just can't wait for the next edition to come out. I plan to have a whole shelf just of the Dresden Files. Keep the books coming Jim!

Does it seem strange (or, rather, not at all strange) to anyone else that SciFi waited until the Friday before the DVD comes out to release the news? Despite their decision, Harry & Co. will live on, not only in the books (9 down, 15 to go :-)) but on the screen. Lionsgate would have done better to have produced the show with USA or TNT; or to have released a series of major motion pictures. I hear that the motion picture route was their first option, but that they were dissuaded from taking it because some feared that it would be too similar to "Constantine"--a thought I am still baffled by. Either way, there's just too much to Harry, Murph, Morgan and the rest of the characters in the Dresden universe that enlivens and awes the imagination for them and their wonderful adventures not to make it again to the screen, big or small, some time soon.

Jim, you're the man. I won't repeat many of the comments to keep your head up, take heart, etc.--anyone who can write a hero who overcomes so much in every minute of everyday has to made of the sternest stuff himself. I look forward to the all of the Dresden to come--books, t.v. episodes, movies, etc. :-). Excelsior!

Well, there goes our plan to upgrade our cable package to get the Sci-Fi channel in time for the season premiere so we didn't have to trudge over to our friends' house to watch it.

Posted by: sammy at August 6, 2007 04:01 PM

It really is to bad they had to sack the show.. After listening to the Hour25 interview with Mr.Butcher I decided to pickup the DVDs to get me through the night shift. They were a bit 2d but entertaining. I loved the Bob character but thought that SciFi needed to give its' audience a bit more credit with a more gritty/horrific feel.
Currently most of the way through the series and am on White Night now. The books are hugely entertaining and addictive.

Looks like Im the only one here that is NOT disappointed that sci-fi has cancelled TDF. I really dont think that the 44 min shows were doing justice to the overall Dresden world of continuing plot lines and story arcs. I also think that the show was very light on action and use of magic overall, maybe due to cost maybe due to story changes. I have given the first Dresden files book to several people that had brought the show up to me. The overall comment that is made to me when they return the book is that Harry is such a wuss on the show and kicks major ass in the books! I dont think this was translated very well in the show. I think they should go the spawn/hell boy route with the Dresden files, doing an animated series or movies would make it much cheaper and I feel better able to tell the story.

Posted by: Cerebral at August 6, 2007 11:59 AM

I didn't get to see all of the series, but I liked what I saw. I started reading the books because Charlaine Harris recomended them and I love them. I now have my Mom, my sister and a brother-in-law reading them.

As far as Sci-Fi....they do seem to cancel the shows I like best, (I'm still upset over Farscape) I think the best thing they have going at the moment is Eureka.

Posted by: cterry at August 6, 2007 08:34 AM

Never heard of THE DRESDEN FILES until the TV series. I now LOVE & own all the books & will be picking up "the Complete Series" on Tuesday to go on my DRESDEN shelf. And soon I will be RPGing in the DRESDEN 'verse too. Thanks for a great show & bringing me into the fold!!!!!!

This sucks big time. I finally find a show I like and oops it's gone. Any possibilities of another network picking it up?

Posted by: Diane at August 5, 2007 10:19 PM

It completely sucks that it got cancelled. Pretty much done with sci-fi here too. Painkiller jane was n2bad, but I didn't really get into it too much. But to take off good shows...and...put...on....wrestling? Are they on crack?

On the good side, the show did lead to me finding and enjoying the hell out of the books. Or rather the show led to the site, which lead to me reading the sample chapters, and going, jeez I need to buy these, and doing so :D.

On the bad side? Sci-Fi execs need a falcon punch directly to the crotch. Which of course is nothing new.

Posted by: Dave at August 5, 2007 09:57 PM

Like many other people, I found the books after I watched the show. In fact, I immediately bought the omnibus editions thru one of the bookclubs. :-D Bought them initially for hubby, but darn I just had to read them first. I'm ticked that SciFi dropped this great show, but like everyone else, I also love the books. Is it time for the next one yet? lol

As far as the renewal, I think I would rather them go to full length movies more than anything else. To me, I think it really is the only way to really give the books any real depth on screen. 44 mins just wasn't enough.

Posted by: Tanya at August 5, 2007 09:04 PM

I TOO AM FURIOUS ABOUT DRESDEN FILE CANCELLATION I LOVED THE CHARACTERS BEING BROUGHT EVEN IF IT WAS NOT EXACTLY TRUE TO THE NOVELS I DO NOT GET THE CONCEPT OF WRESTLING AS SCI FI

Posted by: KATHY at August 5, 2007 08:44 PM

love both your books and the show. It makes me sad that SiFi made this choice. Maybe some where down the road you can put this in a movie format and give Dresden the depth the books have. My hat off to you. Please bring us more.

Posted by: Gene at August 5, 2007 03:44 PM

I knew it would be cancelled. I absolutely LOVE the books, but the show sucked. The show strayed too far from the books. The episodes just didn't have Jim's flare. Paul Blackthorne made a great Harry, but the other main characters were nothing like Jim's creations. No Mister, Blue Beetle, boarding house basement apartment, or McAnally's. Major plot points (like Justin becoming Harry's uncle - and alive) were severely altered. Did the writers even read the books? I was disgusted after the first few episodes and stopped watching.

Posted by: RIP DF at August 5, 2007 01:13 PM

okay that's it, i am completely fed up with the SciFi channel. now that Dresden Files is cancelled and Stargate SG1 is over, i'm thru with SciFi... i tried to get into Painkiller Jane and the show is okay but not fantastic. everything else on SciFi is garbage and i seriously doubt i will ever watch that channel again unless they show Stargate or Dresden reruns...

Posted by: Mogs at August 5, 2007 01:01 PM

Questions?
Does SFC still control the rights to the show or does Lionsgate?

Can the show be shopped around?

Any chance for TV movies?

Do you want fans to mobilize and try to save the show? While the answer to the last question might seem obvious to some people, with cast members and crew moving on, Mr. Butcher, I'd think that you'd know better than anyone if a Save Dresden Files campaign would work.

Posted by: Ann-Marie at August 5, 2007 10:22 AM

Like so many have said before THIS SUCKS!! I thought the Sci Fi channel might start to be good once again. It's gotten worse. The "wrestling" is pathetic at best and I'm a wrestling fan! I still don't understand what horror movies have to do with science fiction whatsoever. They are using old ideas as it is, reviving Battlestar and now Flash Gordon. An original idea to them was probably ECW on SciFi. Ironically, SciFi probably has just shot itself in the foot. Thanks to not reknewing The Dresden Files, they are sending us back to reading and not watching the muck on their channel. I just got the audio of the first book and plan to start on it immediately. There are very few great Sci Fi shows left and they aren't on Sci Fi channel anymore. CW has them. Jim.. think of it this way... they did you a burn by cancelling before it could be more appreciated BUT they did you the biggest favor when they decided this because people are now going to want to find out about Dresden and what's going on with him. So you will sell more books and he lives on stronger than ever with even more fans!! I never would have heard of him if it weren't for them.

Posted by: Misty at August 5, 2007 06:13 AM

Like so many others I discovered the Jim Butcher Dresden books because of the TV series. They are such a joy to read that I went through all of them in a month. There is more than enough material to support the series for a long time.

It was so disappointing to get the offical word that The Dresden Files was cancelled.

I like the idea of movies instead of a series. It would give the actors and writers a better opportunity to explore the characters and the plots. It could become a franchise like Star Wars and Indiana Jones.

One look at the fall line up on many of the other networks should tell Sci-Fi that they have made a grave error.

Unfortunately the actors couldn't sit around and wait for Sci-Fi to make up their minds. It is not surprising that Paul Blackthorne has already found a new job. The actor who played Morgan is now on Kyle XY. Even though he had a recurring role on The Dresden Files when I saw him in Kyle XY I knew there was little hope the show was going to have a second season.

I preordered the DVD's and am anxiously waiting for their arrival. The increase in book sales and the DVD sales should have been a good indicator of how well the series would do. They (Sci-Fi executives) seem to have missed the point that there was no advertising for the books or the DVD's. If they hadn't been mentioned on the Sci-Fi Dresden Files forum I wouldn't have know about them.

Talk to any CEO of a big business and they would tell you sales like that with no advertising is fantastic. Their first reaction would be to find out why sales went up. The conclusion is a simple one, the show was popular so people bought the books. The next step would be to figure out what other products they could develope based on the series and start a marketing campaign for them. In the meantime they would be pushing for more shows so more people would want to buy itmes related to it. NBC/Universal/Sci-Fi could have made a small fortune on tee-shirts, mugs, caps, posters, etc. Then there is always the potential for a game based on the characters.

I plan to watch Big Shots just because Paul Blackthorne is on it. Based on his performance in The Dresden Files he will be good in anything he does.

I apoligize for the long rant. It is just so frustrating to find a good show only to have it cancelled before it ever had a chance.

Posted by: Pat Trunick at August 5, 2007 04:25 AM

Heh. Is anyone familiar with SlyLie surprised that they yanked the rug out from under TDF? So typical for them to sit on the news, too. I`d like to rant and beg but no point. I was a Cracker Campaigner for Farscape way back when. SlyLie is great for putting out a decent show and then killing it. Makes it hard to get invested in anything they do. Ah well, at least we had TDF briefly. I`m another book purist, but they did a good job with the little they got to do with the show. Would be better as movies, but it was a game effort. And as has been said, it brought more people to the books, so Huzzah! for that.

Posted by: Polkawillneverdie at August 5, 2007 12:41 AM

As many others have mentioned, I discovered the books from watching the series. I am also a member of a community of fans of all sorts of multimedia, and through that group, I've been checking periodically on the status of the show. For weeks, it said "pending/ on the bubble".... and then tonight I saw that it said "canceled/ended"

what?!?!???

I would be more than happy to help push to get these entertaining stories back on the air.

Posted by: Southpaw at August 5, 2007 12:38 AM

While I do believe the books are much better (I'm a purist) and the series would be better as movies, the show was pretty good and had a lot of potential. Like the person earlier said, the show brought me to the books. So I have a certain place in my heart for the show. I have not fully given up on the show as some persistence might pay off in some manifestation like with Firefly and Jericho but I am angry at SciFi by not so much canceling the show (I am though) but by the manner in which they did: jerking us loyal fans around. Myself and others (especially fans on SciFi.com's Dresden forum) will leave the channel in frustration over it decision and other factors like its poor choosing of shows *cough* Painkiller Jane and Wrestling *cough* (sorry to those who like the shows) and that the only other shows I enjoy on SciFi are Eureka and Doctor Who, which is on BBC. So, thankfully we still have the books until we reach number 23 or so (yeah!!!!) and Paul Blackthorne has landed on his feet and will undoubtedly do great throughout his career. Hey, maybe another channel will get the show, or maybe a movie? All up to Lionsgate now. Don't forget to buy the DVD on August 7.

Posted by: Peter at August 4, 2007 11:12 PM

Jim, keep your chin up. The books rock and this helped get the word out for you. Think of it as a marketing campaign. Hopefully one of those other cable channels will pick it up. Better yet, maybe turn the books into movies?

Posted by: Dave at August 4, 2007 09:27 PM

I'm also a purist and think the books are infinitely better, but the show wasn't bad. It's too bad they cancelled it before the characters could be properly filled out.

Posted by: synergy at August 4, 2007 07:23 PM

We must protest!!!!!

I live in rainy England and adore The Dresden Files.

Give us more Bob!

Or we'll squisha!

Posted by: Sarah Hammond at August 4, 2007 06:28 PM

I am extremely disappointed. Good writing, decent effects, and man the interactions between Blackthorne and Mann ... I am so unhappy right now. There's just nothing out there like it. Morons at Sci-Fi!

Posted by: CrazyLady at August 4, 2007 03:30 PM

I hate the show got cancelled. It had great potential. Yes the books are better, but the show was good. It's another John Doe(loved that show, when is it ever going to come out on dvd?) and Firefly. The idiots who run these stupid channels push good shows to the side for crap that people watch because there is nothing else on(not me, i would rather do something better with my time). Enough ranting from me. Jim keep up the good work.

Posted by: Jeremy at August 4, 2007 03:19 PM

Who is running SciFi, anyway? Clearly not anyone who appreciates Science Fiction or Fantasy. It's turned into one big schlock-fest, and between gems like "Mansquito" and the addition of Wrestling (??!?!?), I'm just about done with the channel. Why don't execs give things a chance? Guess Reality Shows and Wrestling are cheaper to produce. Ugh.

But I still do have to thank them for creating the Dresden Files TV series, as it made me run out and finally read a few of the books ahead of watching the show. And now I'm hooked, and have a great new author to appreciate. So yay for that!

Posted by: Lisa at August 4, 2007 02:38 PM

I was afraid this was the case because I couldn't find it anywhere on the schedule. I had no idea there were books until reading these comments but am very excited to start reading them. I loved the series and am once again pissed that a channel will not give a good show the time to get noticed (does anyone remember John Doe?) I expect that kind of crap from the big networks but was hoping to be treated better as a fewer on SciFi. It was a great show and I wish it could be reserected!

Posted by: jsvdaughters at August 4, 2007 02:20 PM

A mention on the Charlaine Harris website introduced me to the books. In turn, I have converted three book-buying readers into fans. I regret the loss of the TV series and did what I could to make my feelings known to SciFi. But, it's the books are my first love!

Posted by: Isabell at August 4, 2007 11:50 AM

This is very sad news, indeed! The Dresden Files was the only reason I was watching Sci Fi. That and Stargate SG-1. Now that both shows are over, to heck with Sci Fi. Isn't there some way another network could pick up Dresden? I'm just so sad to see it end like this. It was just getting better and better, I'm sure season two could've been great! Paul Blackthorne made a wonderful Harry, I may continue to watch him. I'll certainly be buying the Dresden DVDs as soon as they become available to enjoy over and over again. =)

Posted by: Carla at August 4, 2007 01:42 AM

Well, I can't say i'm surprised. It seems like Sci Fi is more focused on badly made creature features than good shows lately. And while I realize there are tons of Flash Gordon fans out there.. feh. I'd rather watch Dresden any day.

Ah well, maybe someone else will pick it up. What a shame. I did send a letter expressing my disappointment to Sci Fi Channel, not that they'll look at it. Bah.

TV is so focused on crud programming anymore, canceling shows that have potential for pure doo doo. Just disappointing.

Posted by: Mad Monica at August 4, 2007 01:41 AM

I, like many others, feel fortunately that the Sci-fi channel exposed me to the world of Harry Dresden. I would have never known about the books if it weren't for the TV show. I am saddened by the fact that a television show with so much potential is cancelled, but not surprised. I feel the TV show had alot of potential if it would have gone more into the world that exists in the books. Having posted that, I would love to fight to see this show back on the air. Just let me know who to contact

Posted by: Robert at August 4, 2007 01:33 AM

That hurts. I was afraid it wouldn't last; while I wish they had been truer to the books, any glimpse of Harry Dresden was refreshing in the general crap lineup on TV. That is one thing I can say about the series; the actor who played Harry was a perfect fit for the role.

Posted by: pam at August 4, 2007 01:15 AM

Would it be possible to have everyone just not watch the SciFi channel for a week in protest? Keep up the petition though. Where do I sign???

Posted by: Sojakai at August 4, 2007 12:26 AM

It's a shame that the show is cancelled. It was a very enjoyable show and I was looking forward to a second season. I hope that there is a chance that another channel will develop the material.

LOVE the books and I really hope there are a lot more of them coming.

Diane

Is anyone starting a petition to save TDF

Posted by: diane raetz at August 3, 2007 08:49 PM

I have said it before and I will say it again. I loved The Dresden Files because it was a great show! My first love will always be books. All that matters to me is that I now know about Jim Butcher. I have all of the books.
I definitely mention Jim Butcher every chance I get.
My husband bought me the 3rd Codex book!
I owe Sci-Fi big time. If not for Sci-Fi I might never
have found Jim Butcher.
I try really hard not to kick
myself for finding out so late about Jim Butcher.
By now I might have had more "stuff"(coffee mugs
and so on).
I will definitely watch Big Shots and almost anything else that has the characters of the Series. I have had the DVD on order as soon as I was able to afford it. I can go on and on but I will stop for now.
I have earn some money so I will be able to buy more stuff.
Eventually I will have to ask how come Harry Dresden has red hair?

Posted by: Jackie at August 3, 2007 08:46 PM

I absolutely LOVE your books!! I've read every one of them twice!
But I found the books through the Dresden Files TV series, and I have NO intention of letting it die without one heck of a fight!
Now that the series is officially canceled, the JUST RENEW IT campaign is now officially the NEW HOME 4 TDF campaign! We're going to need everyone, and that includes the folks who didn't feel inspired before, to pitch in & let Lionsgate know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that TDF is worth every second & every penny they can spend on it & that the fans will follow the show & promote it WHEREVER it is!!
I hope everyone will pitch in & help Save Dresden!

Posted by: Zarina at August 3, 2007 07:29 PM

Guess that's it for me, I'm officially swearing off of the wrestling channel, um, I mean the Sci-Fi channel.

Posted by: Ommo at August 3, 2007 05:58 PM

I am a huge fan of your series and I love both the books and the TV show. I am absolutely heartbroken that the show was cancelled!!! I feel like they didn't even give it a chance to grow. Personally I loved it and would have watched it forever. I will continue with your wonderful books! I will miss Paul but now he is Harry in my mind.

Posted by: Stephanie Doughty at August 3, 2007 05:48 PM

While I am a fan of anything that helps bring attention to the series, the books are so much better :). Call me a purist. I try to procetilize the gospel of Butcher every time I meet a potential reader.
