WORKING FOR BIGFOOT

Subterranean Press has announced a collection of Dresden Files stories, uniting the three Bigfoot shorts previously published in other anthologies and the Humble charity bundle eariler this year. Their summary is below:

Chicago wizard for hire Harry Dresden is used to mysterious clients with long hair and legs up to here. But when it turns out the long hair covers every square inch of his latest client’s body, and the legs contribute to a nine-foot height, even the redoubtable detective realizes he’s treading new ground. Strength of a River in His Shoulders is one of the legendary forest people, a Bigfoot, and he has a problem that only Harry can solve. His son Irwin is a scion, the child of a supernatural creature and a human. He’s a good kid, but the extraordinary strength of his magical aura has a way of attracting trouble.

In the three novellas that make up Working For Bigfoot, collected together for the first time here, readers encounter Dresden at different points in his storied career, and in Irwin’s life. As a middle-schooler, in “B is For Bigfoot,” Irwin attracts the unwelcome attention of a pair of bullying brothers who are more than they seem, and when Harry steps in, it turns out they have a mystical guardian of their own. At a fancy private high school in “I Was a Teenage Bigfoot,” Harry is called in when Irwin grows ill for the first time, and it’s not just a case of mono. Finally, Irwin is all grown up and has a grown-up’s typical problems as a freshman in college in “Bigfoot on Campus,” or would have if typical included vampires.

New York Times bestseller Jim Butcher explores the responsibilities of fatherhood and the difficulties of growing up with the elements Dresden Files fans crave—detection, adventure, humor, and magic.

Paranet-Front-Cover-Image-900pxEvil Hat Productions, publishers of the multi-award-winning Dresden Files RPG, have let us know that they finally have a release date for the long-awaited Paranet Papers supplement — and it’s soon!

Evil Hat expects to see the book reach retail stores by June 1st of this year. This book is a beast—it’ll clock in at 372 pages, almost as big as volume one of the RPG—and gorgeous as heck (you can download a preview at that link).

Evil Hat also tells us they’ll be running an instant content preorder for the book starting sometime in March (probably after their current Kickstarter concludes). An instant content preorder works like this: you order the physical book now, and they send you the PDF of the book right away and the physical book when it’s ready in June. Evil Hat will be inviting retail game stores to participate in the instant content preorder as well, via the Bits & Mortar website.

Here are the details about the book:

Stand together against the darkness…

In Jim Butcher’s bestselling Dresden Files books, the forces of good bond together into an organization called the Paranet in a desperate attempt to turn the tides of their equally desperate war against big baddies like the Fomor and the Denarians. Now you can bring the Paranet to your Dresden Files RPG game with the Paranet Papers supplement.

Travel to exotic locations like Las Vegas and South America to fight evil. Team up with characters from Turn Coat and Changes to fight evil. Join up with other Paranetters to…well, you get the picture.

The Dresden Files RPG Volume 3: Paranet Papers includes the following material:

  • Updated information through the Dresden Files novel Changes, with hints of Ghost Story
  • Detailed information on four key Dresdenverse times and places: Las Vegas, the Russian Revolution, the Neverglades, and Las Tierras Rojas/the Red Lands
  • Detailed rules and setting information for navigating the spirit world known as the Nevernever
  • Updated magical systems, including new material on soulfire, sponsorship, and thaumaturgy
  • New and updated creatures to populate your game, including demons, archangels, creatures of the Nevernever, and scions
  • Character updates and new characters introduced to the Dresdenverse

Turned LeftThe Paranet Papers. Because playing a wizard wasn’t dangerous enough already.

And speaking of Evil Hat, they’re running a Kickstarter campaign right now for Don’t Turn Your Back, a board game set in their delightfully creepy Don’t Rest Your Head setting. Fans of horror, urban fantasy, and dark dreams will want to check this one out for its psychedelic flavor. The campaign ends on March 4th, so don’t wait too long to check this one out!

In other Jim-related news, unfortunately we have to report that the upcoming NSU events in Oklahoma in two weeks have been canceled due to a family issue. Here are the new dates for the NSU events:

  • Wednesday, March 25, 2015, 6-7 p.m.: NSU Tahlequah Webb Auditorium

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR JIM BUTCHER TO WRITE A NEW FANTASY SERIES FOR ROC BOOKS

First Installment The Cinder Spires: THE AERONAUT’S WINDLASS to be Published This Fall.  Preorder here!

NEW YORK, NY, February 10, 2015—Roc Books, an imprint of Penguin Random House, announced today the acquisition of a new fantasy series by Jim Butcher, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Dresden Files novels. Executive Editor Anne Sowards bought World English Rights from Jennifer Jackson at Donald Maass Literary Agency. The first novel in the new series, The Cinder Spires: THE AERONAUT’S WINDLASS, will be released in hardcover on September 29, 2015.

Jim Butcher became one of the most recognized names in science fiction and fantasy with the internationally bestselling Dresden Files series featuring Harry Dresden, Chicago’s only professional wizard. The series garnered a large and devoted fan base for Butcher that continues to grow with each installment; the last five Dresden Files books skyrocketed to #1 on the New York Times bestseller list. Butcher is currently at work on Peace Talks, the sixteenth installment in the phenomenally successful urban fantasy series. In addition to The Dresden Files, Butcher is also the author of the acclaimed, New York Times bestselling Codex Alera epic fantasy series.

Sowards describes The Cinder Spires as, “Horatio Hornblower meets The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen—it’s a fantastic, creative new series of airships, privateers, warrior monks, and mad sorcerers. Honestly, it’s like Jim put all my favorite things in one book!”

The Cinder Spires is set in a fascinating new world, where an ancient evil has awoken, plunging the world into a shroud of mists filled with monstrous and fantastic creatures. The fate of humanity will rest on the loyalty and courage of a single airship’s crew. New York Times bestselling author David Weber said, “This is Jim Butcher at his best…It’s steampunk meets magic with a dose of sci-fi for seasoning.”

The Cinder Spires: THE AERONAUT’S WINDLASS is poised to be one of the fall’s biggest genre releases, and Butcher fans are anxiously awaiting news about the release. Perfect for readers of Brandon Sanderson and Naomi Novik—in addition to Butcher’s existing fans— The Cinder Spires is a grand new adventure from one of the biggest names in fantasy.
