We finally have our answer, and it’s just as we suspected: the Dresden Files TV show has been canceled. Read more about the decision at TV Guide.com.
While we wish SciFi could have decided differently, we’re still grateful for the twelve great episodes that aired earlier this year. Largely thanks to the TV show, book sales tripled, and no doubt more new fans will continue to discover the series through reruns and the DVDs. Speaking of which, the DVDs will be released this Tuesday! Buy them here on Amazon.com.
Additionally, fans of Paul Blackthorne will be cheered to learn that he has joined the cast of ABC’s Big Shots.

Addendum, 2014: This show was canceled in 2007. There’s no bringing it back. The rights have reverted to Jim.
While I am a fan of anything that helps bring attention to the series, the books are so much better :). Call me a purist. I try to procetilize the gospel of Butcher every time I meet a potential reader.
I am a huge fan of your series and I love both the books and the TV show. I am absolutely heartbroken that the show was cancelled!!! I feel like they didn’t even give it a chance to grow. Personally I loved it and would have watched it forever. I will continue with your wonderful books! I will miss Paul but now he is Harry in my mind.
Guess that’s it for me, I’m officially swearing off of the wrestling channel, um, I mean the Sci-Fi channel.
I absolutely LOVE your books!! I’ve read every one of them twice!
But I found the books through the Dresden Files TV series, and I have NO intention of letting it die without one heck of a fight!
Now that the series is officially canceled, the JUST RENEW IT campaign is now officially the NEW HOME 4 TDF campaign! We’re going to need everyone, and that includes the folks who didn’t feel inspired before, to pitch in & let Lionsgate know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that TDF is worth every second & every penny they can spend on it & that the fans will follow the show & promote it WHEREVER it is!!
I hope everyone will pitch in & help Save Dresden!
I have said it before and I will say it again. I loved The Dresden Files because it was a great show! My first love will always be books. All that matters to me is that I now know about Jim Butcher. I have all of the books.
I definitely mention Jim Butcher every chance I get.
My husband bought me the 3rd Codex book!
I owe Sci-Fi big time. If not for Sci-Fi I might never
have found Jim Butcher.
I try really hard not to kick
myself for finding out so late about Jim Butcher.
By now I might have had more “stuff”(coffee mugs
and so on).
I will definitely watch Big Shots and almost anything else that has the characters of the Series. I have had the DVD on order as soon as I was able to afford it. I can go on and on but I will stop for now.
I have earn some money so I will be able to buy more stuff.
Eventually I will have to ask how come Harry Dresden has red hair?
Is anyone starting a petition to save TDF
It’s a shame that the show is cancelled. It was a very enjoyable show and I was looking forward to a second season. I hope that there is a chance that another channel will develop the material.
LOVE the books and I really hope there are a lot more of them coming.
Diane
Would it be possible to have everyone just not watch the SciFi channel for a week in protest? Keep up the petition though. Where do I sign???
That hurts. I was afraid it wouldn’t last; while I wish they had been truer to the books, any glimpse of Harry Dresden was refreshing in the general crap lineup on TV. That is one thing I can say about the series; the actor who played Harry was a perfect fit for the role.
I, like many others, feel fortunately that the Sci-fi channel exposed me to the world of Harry Dresden. I would have never known about the books if it weren’t for the TV show. I am saddened by the fact that a television show with so much potential is cancelled, but not surprised. I feel the TV show had alot of potential if it would have gone more into the world that exists in the books. Having posted that, I would love to fight to see this show back on the air. Just let me know who to contact
Well, I can’t say i’m surprised. It seems like Sci Fi is more focused on badly made creature features than good shows lately. And while I realize there are tons of Flash Gordon fans out there.. feh. I’d rather watch Dresden any day.
Ah well, maybe someone else will pick it up. What a shame. I did send a letter expressing my disappointment to Sci Fi Channel, not that they’ll look at it. Bah.
TV is so focused on crud programming anymore, canceling shows that have potential for pure doo doo. Just disappointing.
This is very sad news, indeed! The Dresden Files was the only reason I was watching Sci Fi. That and Stargate SG-1. Now that both shows are over, to heck with Sci Fi. Isn’t there some way another network could pick up Dresden? I’m just so sad to see it end like this. It was just getting better and better, I’m sure season two could’ve been great! Paul Blackthorne made a wonderful Harry, I may continue to watch him. I’ll certainly be buying the Dresden DVDs as soon as they become available to enjoy over and over again. =)
A mention on the Charlaine Harris website introduced me to the books. In turn, I have converted three book-buying readers into fans. I regret the loss of the TV series and did what I could to make my feelings known to SciFi. But, it’s the books are my first love!
I was afraid this was the case because I couldn’t find it anywhere on the schedule. I had no idea there were books until reading these comments but am very excited to start reading them. I loved the series and am once again pissed that a channel will not give a good show the time to get noticed (does anyone remember John Doe?) I expect that kind of crap from the big networks but was hoping to be treated better as a fewer on SciFi. It was a great show and I wish it could be reserected!
Who is running SciFi, anyway? Clearly not anyone who appreciates Science Fiction or Fantasy. It’s turned into one big schlock-fest, and between gems like “Mansquito” and the addition of Wrestling (??!?!?), I’m just about done with the channel. Why don’t execs give things a chance? Guess Reality Shows and Wrestling are cheaper to produce. Ugh.
But I still do have to thank them for creating the Dresden Files TV series, as it made me run out and finally read a few of the books ahead of watching the show. And now I’m hooked, and have a great new author to appreciate. So yay for that!
I hate the show got cancelled. It had great potential. Yes the books are better, but the show was good. It’s another John Doe(loved that show, when is it ever going to come out on dvd?) and Firefly. The idiots who run these stupid channels push good shows to the side for crap that people watch because there is nothing else on(not me, i would rather do something better with my time). Enough ranting from me. Jim keep up the good work.
I am extremely disappointed. Good writing, decent effects, and man the interactions between Blackthorne and Mann … I am so unhappy right now. There’s just nothing out there like it. Morons at Sci-Fi!
We must protest!!!!!
I live in rainy England and adore The Dresden Files.
Give us more Bob!
Or we’ll squisha!
I’m also a purist and think the books are infinitely better, but the show wasn’t bad. It’s too bad they cancelled it before the characters could be properly filled out.
Jim, keep your chin up. The books rock and this helped get the word out for you. Think of it as a marketing campaign. Hopefully one of those other cable channels will pick it up. Better yet, maybe turn the books into movies?
