The Future of the Dresden Files

DearAuthor.com brings us good news about the future of The Dresden Files:

You know you are big time when you get to sell unnamed book 12 and unnamed book 13.
Jim Butcher’s DRESDEN FILES 12 and DRESDEN FILES 13, new books in the successful series, now also a television show, featuring Harry Dresden, wizard-for-hire, in Chicago, to Anne Sowards at Roc, in a significant deal, by Jennifer Jackson at the Donald Maass Literary Agency.

Looks like we’re safe for the time being!
Jim has stated on several occasions that he is planning to write a total of about 20 Dresden Files “case books” like those we’ve read so far, then cap off the series with an Apocalyptic Trilogy. The tenth book in the series, Small Favor, is due out in Spring 2008.

  1. Love your books, always know when you find a great author because you find yourself re-reading them…Long live Harry oh and the author …

  2. Love this series, am square-eyed from reading the first eight back to back…
20 books and an apocalyptic trilogy??? yaaaay! *doing my happy dance*

  3. Hey, Is the TV show going to stay on Sci-FI? How bout pitching it to the C/W. They carried Charmed and Angel. I think it would be a great fit. I really hope there is a second season. I loved the show and I have never read one of your books.
    I promise I will now!!!:):)
    Thanks!!

  5. Until “The Dresden Files”, I hadn’t enjoyed Sunday night TV since “Forever Knight”. Now I am eagerly devouring the books….please keep writing, fellow! Delightful and rewarding – Thank You

  6. Jim, love the books – not so the show – the story of the books in the show would have been better.
Is the difference down to the same sort of problems that plague the genre with the fundementalists decrying them and the likes of harry Potter or just TV/film making a horrlicks of already good material. myself and the Bro in law often wonder about this – over here in Ireland and The uk you could go a lot darker and more complex with the story line and we’d love it a lot more – you gotta write faster though just finished number 9 – was sorry to see lash go – or has she? and how is this going to affect Harrys powers – he was getting stronger – I guess all be revealed soon enough – get the guy some lovin’ though he could use the release!

  7. I really love the “Dresden Files” books. I was wondering if you where going to bring back Susan, part vampire, in anyone of your books. I think Harry should try and find a cure for her problem.

  8. I really enjoyed the tv series. It got me so interested in Dresden, That I’ve bought the first five. I finished 3 so far. They are even better than the series. But I really liked BOB in the series. If Sci-Fi doesn’t pick it up again try Lifetime. They did a great job with Tanya Huff’s Blood series. Keep it up. joy

  9. I love the tv show! I didn’t even know about the books until today. I’m an avid reader and I’m looking forward to starting the series. Please don’t let them cancel the show. Take it to the C/W if you have to, just DON’T cancel it please.

  10. I watched the TV series first and liked it a lot. I’m glad that it will continue. However, I LOVE the books that I started reading after I started watching the series. Mr. Butcher, the detail and comedy inherent in your books keeps me riveted. I feel as though I actually transported into the story. I can’t wait for the next book and I really hope that you really plan to write at least 20 books about Harry Dresden. I’ve decided that since I love the books so much, I will read the Alera books. Thanks for your wonderful contribution to sci-fi/fantasy writing!!!

  11. Freakin’ Sweet!!! I am so glad to hear that there are plenty of more Dresden books coming in the future. I love where the stories are going and I am hoping that the Sci Fi Channel picks up the Dresden Files for another season. This news has just made me a happy man..

  12. A friend suggested that I would love this new tv series called The Dresden Files on Sci/Fi Network. I kept missing the show and another friend walked into work one day and handed me the first two novels of the series. I read the first book in about a day and a half, which I have NEVER done before. I have, since then, purchased all the books (by trudging off to a used bookseller, eBay & Amazon.com). Needless to say, I am hooked and do immensely enjoy the storylines. It’s so great to have a crime drama complete with magic, faeries and all sorts of creatures and whatnots. I’m only on book IV now and hope more is uncovered about Harry’s parents. Congratulations on all your success and keep up the good work!

  13. As with others, I was hooked with the very 1st episode of the ‘Dresden Files’ on SCIFI and when I saw an author listed, immediately set out to buy ‘the book’. The PTBs must be smiling on my head because I found….8 books at Borders! Oh happy day! What a great read I’ve had during my convalescence! Can’t wait for ‘White Night’ in paperback.
Like everyone else, very happy indeed with Butcher’s books, they are wonderful, funny and characters are amazing!! I enjoyed the t.v. series, too, and hope a 2nd is in the works as well..certainly have enough material for quite a run!!

  14. Love the references, obscure and otherwise, to all of the scifi, fantasy, and comedy I grew up with. My kids like the stories, but they look at me like I’ve grown a second head when I laugh at a tossed-in reference to Monty Python or some eighties cultural thing.
I wish the sci fi channel could do these works justice… Mr. Butcher may become the Ian Fleming of science fiction: great stories that become mass media video successes having little in common the fine print tales they share a common title with. Not that I’m against him making a buck or two on the screen, especially if it supports his ability to keep cranking out some of the best books I’ve ever read.
    Bravo!

  15. I have always hated this genre. Then I watched my first Dresden Files. I am so hooked!!!! On May 13th, I bought all the paperbacks that Borders had (1-6) and just completed them, have downloaded the first season on i-Tunes and had to get on the website to see when the 1st season DVD is coming out, because I couldn’t find it in stores. I really hope you give Harry and his crew more than just twenty books for us to read.
    Thank you. Mary

  16. thank god there are more to come! im more hooked on this than any other book ive ever read. harry dresden is irresistable, and u fall in love with him right away. id cry if u stopped writing the dresden files! thanks so much jim for the killer books

  17. My father’s getting upwards in age, and not being a wizard, he’s not going to live for another 180 years. He’s asked me to log on here to try to prod Jim into writing faster. I’d have to agree, since the TV show isn’t doing it as well as the books for my “Dresden Fix”. I love Jim, and his writing style is amazing. So… *prod, prod, then taps the arm.* Hurry up with my fix, man!

  18. Hi I have to say that The Dresden Files is the Best series of books that I have ever read:D
The books I have so far are Storm Front, Death Masks, Proven Guilty and I have on order at my local book store Blood Rites and Dead Beat. I also find the series to be funny and picked with lots of action and drama. I’ve also been watching the T.V. series on Sci-Fi and I heard that they may not make a Season 2:( I sure hope that they will make a Season 2 because it’s just a great show to watch:)
    Thanks,
    Miya
And please never stop writing your work is just Amazing.

  19. I have just spent the last 3 days in Chicago with Dresden and loved it all. I have tried and tried to write in first person and man it’s difficult by Dresden files pulls it off effortlessly. I love this series and the characters are wonderfully real. I can see Michael and Shiro, I can see Bob and Lash in my mind as clearly as I see myself. I hope there are many, many more of this series. I also hope that this smart, classy series of stories continue forever. Thank you Mr. Butcher for a wonderful ride. I’m looking forward to visiting you in Alera as well.
    Paladine be with you,
    Kim
