Jim Updates Us

Hey all,
Just wanted to drop some updates on you all. We’ll start with the most often asked about:
TELEVISION
No new word to report, except that the project is still moving forward and still looking strong. I have read a draft or two of the proposals flitting back and forth, and they bear a pleasingly strong resemblence to the novels, and may include dispensing of “Erik” Dresden for Harry Dresden.
(Which makes me happy. The most prominent Eric in my life was a high-school rival for the affections of a girl. He 1) egged my car and 2) got the girl. All in all, it worked out better for me that way, but my car’s paint is STILL stained with eggs.)
SCI-FI BOOK CLUB OMNIBUS
The first three books of the series (STORM FRONT, FOOL MOON, GRAVE PERIL) have been picked up by the Science Fiction Book Club for publication in an omnibus edition (in hardback). They are putting a rush on this one, and are going to be out in March or April, in order to be available before Dead Beat hits the shelves. No word on books 4-6, but I assume that if the first omnibus sells well, the second volume will follow.
FOREIGN LANGUAGE EDITIONS
If I haven’t mentioned it, the Dresden Files are now being published in Russian, Polish, Chinese (specifically Mandarin, I think), Czech and we are now in talks for a German edition as well, which look very promising.
ROLE PLAYING GAME
You know all about that one. 🙂
I’ll share more as I hear it, as always.

  1. VERY COOL JIM!!! I AM SO EXCITED FOR YOU AND FOR ME, BEING A HUGE FAN!!
    THANKS AGAIN FOR ALL!!!
    ANGEL.

  2. it all sounds outstanding (especially) the possible name change. i was also wandering if u would be attending sheva con in feburary in roanoak va

  3. Great news! I have been politicking SFBC to get your books in. I’ll write and pre-order. Hmmm, who do I know who would like these…. Got any on Talking Books?

  4. THANK YOU FOR THE UPDATE. I CAN NOT WAIT TILL I SEE HARRY ON THE LITTLE SCREEN. MAYBE, AND THE FINGERS ARE CROSSED HERE, WE WILL SEE HARRY ON THE BIG SCREEN. I CAN THINK OF A FEW GOOD ACTORS THAT WOULD FIT THE PART AS HARRY. AS A WISE MAN ONCE SAID “GIVE’EM HELL HARRY”

  5. Fingers crossed that the producers keep the name ‘Harry’.
I know of at least 4 people including myself who are waiting for book 7.

  6. Hey thanks for thinking of the fans that have suppored you .. all you writers putting out a fairly good series put out 4 or 5 books ..get semi famous or have a decent following and then put the next one out in hard back .. why ?? think of the loyal fans who buy your books .. read your stories ,, why do writers always do this .. and dont tell me its the publishers,, its always there fault .. well thanks for nothing ,

  7. Hard cover/soft cover…relax people!! If you are a true fan it really won’t matter. Yes hard covers are a little more expensive, but it’s not like it’s a million dollars! besides hardcover books are worth it, they last a lot longer. Just my opinion!!
Keep up the good work Jim!
    Angel.

  8. awesome news about the foreign language translations! i’m obsessed with the series since the first book was released and always try to talk my friends into reading it, too, but unfortunately most people simply tell me that their english is too bad to read them….. so YAY for the Dresden files in German 🙂

  9. I’m agree with Mike about Hardbacks. i hate it when my favorite authors whom has published PB in the past are now starting to come out in HD. Just isn’t fair for the poor folk. :o(
I guess I’ll have to wait even longer now for the PB version to come out. grrrrrr

  10. I think it’s a big step for someone who’s only been printing in PB previously. Show some sort of accomplishment…at least that’s what I think. I’ve never had a problem about shelling out an extra 15 bucks for the HB, but then again I like collecting books as well.

  11. I’m really glad about the SFBC omnibus… my books are falling apart, and a hardcover is more durable. Even if my wallet hates me for it 🙂

  12. I think it’s great that the series is being released in hard back as well. I’ll still keep my old paperback copies (to lend to friends, in order to get them stuck on the series), but I’ll probably squirrel a little of my paycheck aside for the hard cover copies as well.
To those who are complaining: relax. You act as though this was a move done specifically to undermine your wallet. It wasn’t. I’m sure the books will be released in paperback as well. If you don’t want to wait to read the book until the paper copy comes out, check it out from your library, and buy the paper copy later. But don’t moan about Jim getting them printed in hardback.
Congrats! Can’t wait for the next one.

  13. Glad to hear that there is a strong chance that they will keep the name Harry. Eric Dresdon just didn’t have the same ring to it. Anyway congrats to Jim as always, I just love the books and can’t wait for the TV adaptation. I just hope that it’s written and casted well (James Marsters as Harry).

  14. so whats this i hear about a possable tv show made from your books. if its true that rocks. hope we get to see it soon.

  15. I hate it when people tell others to “relax” in their posts. It’s very degrading to them. Just because you are a “true” fan doesn’t necessarily mean you can afford a hardcover, which is quite often 3-4 times the price of the paperback. It would be great if publishers were considerate enough to sell both simultaneously, but that would never happen. To all the poor Dresden fans out there, I feel for ya!

  16. Hey, I’ve been a fan since the first book. I am currently mad about the next book and when I say mad I mean anxious. I really am having a hard time waiting. I am currently re-reading every book in the Harry Dresden files for the fourth time, just trying to figure out if I missed anything for the next book. Anyway, I will be buying the hb so good job!

  17. I’m very glad they may be keeping the name Harry, Erik (with a ‘K’ no less) is a horrible name for this character – doesn’t fit him at all.
    Can’t stand the waiting….. 🙂

  18. Hardback! Yes! The sign of a true novelist. I envy you! (since I have yet to even be published, you are like a god to me.) Anyway, did I hear a RP Game? I would sooooo love that. I love RolePlaying (Table top, LARP, Online) and a Harry Dresden one would be great. Specially if it came with character sheets with character pictures (I would so horde the Harry and Thomas ones, and of course Michael D

  19. Hardcover, paperbacks, e-books, oh my!
That’s what we need; more e-books!! Currently the only one i’ve seen in e-book format has been “Summer Knight”. E-books are (usually) cheaper than the hardcover when they come out and (usually) come out at the same time as the hardcover. I went on ebay and bought a real cheap pocket PC just for my ebooks so i could take all my books with me and have more room on my shelves. I’m hoping there will be a push to go back and publish the whole series as e-books. Then I can carry them ALL wherever I go!!
