Changes released!

“Changes” is released today!

Unfortunately, it’s still not yet available for Kindle, but we hope Penguin and Amazon will resolve their differences before too long. We invite folks to share their thoughts on the forum, but please, confine your remarks to the “Spoilers” section, and always place clear warnings in the subject line when creating a new Changes-related thread. Remember that many of Jim’s fans don’t or can’t read the book the day it’s released, so please be cautious and courteous of your fellow posters.
If you haven’t gotten your copy yet, you can order it through the Jim-Butcher.com store!
And yes, there will be more books in the Dresden Files series. Jim has plans for at least 20 total!

  1. Seeing as the book is still not available for Kindle i am forced to sustain myself by reading spoiler filled tidbits from this page. How agonizing.

  2. i think that martha liberty could be a possible candidate as Harry’s mother.
she is supposed to be unusually tall for a woman, and its already been said that Ebenezer isn’t very tall, so that’s one family resemblance linking them already.

  3. I know everyones thinking it but I’m going to say it, the main thing i want is a major smack down with every major baddie and all of the good guys backing Dresden in a climatic fight on the scale of the Winter/Summer and our huge battle at the end of both Turn Coat and Changes.

  4. ok people Harry is fine first of all the stories are told in first person as a recall second when he is on the boat he calls soup and chili one helluva last meal and is recounting this

  5. I concur with Odin on this one ha, first Harry just got shot, not enough to bring him down since it was more like a shoulder wound than anything, and second, it takes much more than that to take down not only our beloved Dresden, maverick of the White Council, Warden of Chicago, pupil of Lash, but the Winter Knight to boot! It’ll take a more significant hostility to bring him down.

  6. I forsee the actual shooter being relatively inconsequential … probably one of the ‘scattershot’ hitmen the ‘Eebs’ hired earlier. But what a great opportunity for Harry to play dead for awhile! Maybe hole up on his private little ‘island-o-creepiness’ and get a dose of magical boot-camp from Lea.

  7. Valentine – Not Martha Libery. She knows Harry is Margaret’s son and, lord knows, she would know that she had Margeret. But her comment to Ebenezer in Book 4, ‘you know what he was ment to be. He’s dangerous.’ Don’t think she would talk that way about her grandson.
About Susan’s fate. Lea called her his concubine. His lover, the mother of his child to whom he is not YET married. Does Jim drop subtle hints?

  8. Mr. Butcher,
Though a lot of Dresden readers hate Susan, I actually liked her character more than Murphy. So you can just imagine my heartbreak at her death. I cant get over her loss that I dont know if I can read the continuing series.

  9. Vickie – I felt the same way after book 3. So don’t give up. She may pop up way later. After all Lea has her body and didn’t want Harry to put it in the ground and cover it up with dirt. Look at the Buffy series. They killed off Darla, Angel, Buffy and Spike and they all came back. This is make believe – anything can happen.
I think Harry realized she did make the right choice hiding Maggie from him, because he now had to make the same choice. To bad she never knew it was her father that saved her. He never heard her call him Daddy. That’s the saddest part of the book.

  10. I believe that Harrys’ lost his life for a brief while, but Murphey saved him by cpr.. Now once Harry died, hes’ fulfilled the death prophecy on himself, and also is no longer a knight of winter, due to his short untimely death, in which the queen will have to relinquish Harry from her grasp. At least I hope she will. After all, Harry still has to go after the traitor in the white council.

  11. To Bev (who posted at April 16, 2010 11:26 AM):
Sorry, but you got Lea’s line wrong. What she actually said was: “His lover, the mother of his child, yet to whom he is not wed?” The “yet” in this case conveys a contrast with a wife (who is the mother AND to whom the father is wed). It does not convey an event to occur thereafter.

  12. On the other hand, Bev, don’t give up hope that Harry won’t get to hear his daughter call him daddy. Somehow I doubt even Father Forthill can make her “disappear” well enough that Jim won’t find a way to bring her back! (Although, I’m rooting for her ending up staying with “Gramps”.)

  13. Vicky:
Count me as among those who didn’t really care for Susan (though ‘hate’ is too strong a word, I just thought her relationship with Harry was forced and a little half-baked).
I’m disappointed in what happens to the Red Court. I thought that event should have come later in the series. Plus I was hoping for a chance for Jim to resolve one major plot weakness. I’ve always thought the scene with Bianca in Storm Front was a little creaky. Her behavior (especially after Harry merely defended himself) seemed a little contrived. Certainly after he avenged the murder of her employee (and proved his innocence) by eliminating Sells, Bianca should have apologized. Since this was the start of the events that led to the Vampire War, the weakness of that scene was something I was hoping Jim would “correct” (such as by having it turn out not to be the real Bianca – and that the whole thing was contrived as an excuse for the war). Oh well.
Meanwhile, say it loud, say it proud: Harry Lives!

  14. How does one get away with doing… that… to one’s viewpoint character? I mean… say it ain’t so!
But by the same token, it happened before, but the circumstances were a little different then. I’ve both hope and faith that somehow Harry will pull through this one. Maybe it’ll be resolved in the upcoming novella?
Oh yeah. Love the series, Dresden kicks copious ass, ancillary powers or no.
Wonder if anyone will notice my idiotic in-joke?

  15. Well it’s almost all been said. A wonderful read, and yes the end was a tad disconcerting. I look forward to finding out whether Mister is all right! :p
On another note I would suggest Ryan Phillippe play Thomas if there is a movie. I did love the T.V. show and like many people it got me interested to read the books. Jim you are a fun author. I hope I like the game. The other table-top fantasy role-playing game I play has never quite got magic right, IMO.

  16. holy crap! awesome book I am utterly confused about the last page of the book lol i definitely reread the last few pages several times to be sure i had read it right! WHEN IS THE NEXT BOOK COMING?!?!?! i need to know what happens!

  17. *spoilers*!
If someone has mentioned this already i apologize, and this may sound like a simpsons reference but what if it was maggie, from the future, and that shooting harry was somehow supposed to save him from something, like himself and the decisions he had to make

  18. Umm very unlikely since traversing the flow of time is a violation of the Laws of Magic, I’m just waiting for most of that night at Bianca ball will come to the light, like when will Mister Ferro resurface and what did Bianca give him?!

  19. Lol there’s some weird Calvin Klien model who looks like a raccoon
The comic Dresden is very true to his description-physically and personally. Who looks like the comic Harry?
