“Changes” is released today!
Unfortunately, it’s still not yet available for Kindle, but we hope Penguin and Amazon will resolve their differences before too long. We invite folks to share their thoughts on the forum, but please, confine your remarks to the “Spoilers” section, and always place clear warnings in the subject line when creating a new Changes-related thread. Remember that many of Jim’s fans don’t or can’t read the book the day it’s released, so please be cautious and courteous of your fellow posters.
If you haven’t gotten your copy yet, you can order it through the Jim-Butcher.com store!
And yes, there will be more books in the Dresden Files series. Jim has plans for at least 20 total!

All Those New To This Forum!! Beware!! If you haven’t read the book yet, DO NOT read beyond this message.
A few well-meaning-but-thoughtless fans have posted spoilers.
Reading Changes was the most emotional, crazy, heart warming, heart breaking, tragic, thrilling, and breathtaking 24 hours of my life. My mind and heart were numb for I don’t know how long after that ending and I think unless I get another book soon, I will be for a long time to come.
Now that the Codex Alera seems done, I hope Mr. Butcher keeps up his pace of two releases a year except rather than two series, his sole focus is the Dresden series. I need the other one soon, otherwise I think my heart will stop.
If fans can get together an petition for more books more often, I am willing to put in the work to make that happen!
What a ride!
god oh god oh god this is the Deathstalker series all over again isn’t it!
Jim Butcher you ass if you do the same thing to me as Simon R Green did in the Deathstalker series i swear i am gonna do as my namesake did to Owen Deathstalker’s home of Virimonde
Only i won’t be so gentle! unlike the True Valentine Wolfe, The Grinning Psychopath oh unholy lord of the drugs i don’t have chemistry sets and drugs, and stuff to keep my mind off of those who have wronged me!
With Respect Valentine Wolfe wannabe
ps sorry if i sound a bit crazy but i hate it when my favorite chars are killed, Valentine Wolfe the Grinning Psychopath unholy lord of the Drugs being a great example.
yeah i wouldnt yet either actually…good point, Lea could do some nasty buissness but i think she pledge she would lay Susan to rest as respectively as Harry would, and harry would animate her vampire turned corpse.
I’m trying to knock off names of who would shoot Harry like that and get away with it. Kincaid came to mind first but its way to sloppy and no motive, Lara maybe….? anyone else got any?
Nicodemus, Mavra, john marcone, black council. maybe Lara
Mr. Butcher, your skills as a writer have matured tremendously over the past decade and Changes is a new peak. The plotting and character development were absolutely first rate and you were simply masterful balancing humor, suspense and heartbreak – as often as not in the same sentence.
Then there were the reveals about Harry’s family history. Shocking, yet completely believable as they gave depth and motive to characters we’ve grown to know and enjoy over many books. But you really outdid yourself on the final page. All I can say is, “you sneaky, brilliant sonofabitch”.
Well done, sir. Well done.
Been a loyal reader since the first book, I agree with all the posts… Brilliant… Wild E Cycote…SUPER GENIUS!!!! First Thought… Ivy knows all that has been written, so she probably knows Harry wouldnt want to take up the White Knight Mantle, and the hit has Kincade written all over it… and I agree, its a great way to get Harry out of the contract… One question… Why would Susan hire a hitman to shoot Harry? did i get caught up in the story and miss something?
JIm, PLEASE dont keep us hanging for a year!!!
No that was Arianna camoed like Susan, remember when Martin said that some of the old vamps could wear what ever flesh cover they wanted? The hit at the end couldn’t have been mavra, she wouldn’t have used a gun, kincaid being an excellent shot could have staged it to look or be another near death exprience like when gard saved him. Cuz that was way to sloppy for the hellhound. My bet is Lara or…..that guy that did the hit and run in turn coat when he saw the skinwalker who we never found out who it was.
*SPOILERS*
There’s way too many people that we know about who would have pulled the hit on Dresden to start bringing in things we don’t know about. Lea said, “And you still have only the beginnings of an idea how many have tried…… Tried, and failed.” The list is as long as Mr. Butcher’s imagination.
Excellent book by the way.
Masterful Mr. Butcher. Now we play the waiting game. Sigh…
My time line is off. When did Susan get pregnant? If the girl is 8, Susan would have had to be pregnant before she was partially turned in book 3. If it was book 5, the child would have been born in Nov 2003 and only be 6 by Oct 2010 (or 5 if the book is in 2009). I dwell on trivia.
Also, who is Harry’s grandmother??????
Nathan – my bet is on Fix, the Summer Knight.
**Spoilers**
I doubt that this hit was Kinkaid, he wouldn’t leave Ivy and it wasn’t an instant kill shot, also doubt Lara, the approuch was to direct, not Fix becuase the balance was just created to be unbalancing things this quickly. My money is on Black Council.
On other topics now that Harry took up the title of Winter Knight does Mab still have a hold over him with that last favor he owed??
SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hmmmmm…. well, I’m onboard with everyone else for the ending of Changes. Helluva book, I gotta say. Even by Jim Butcher standards. But, much like everyone else, I NEED to have book 13 (about 7 hours ago when I finished Changes. At 3 am. Do want moar)!! The end was just a segue for the next book. I’m betting it had something to do with Queen Mab to get her Winter Knight on active duty. Or something more convoluted. NEED BOOK 13, PLEASE!!!
Thx.
***********Spoilers Alert************************************
Jim,
I really loved the book and I really do love all the characters. I was sincerely glad that almost everyone we have met made an appearance and that things seem to be getting better for Thomas and Harry.
But. . . the ending truly is unbecoming to you as a writer. All of the previous books have been self-contained novels in and of themselves. Changing the rules in the middle of the series to comport yourself as if writing the Friday episode of a soap opera or an episode in old Saturday matinee serials is unattractive and unappealing. The ending simply was not fair to all of us, faithful readers who went out to buy the book on the day it was released.
Other than the unexpected, unsatisfying, and very annoying ending, this was probably the best of all the Dresden books, although I will always treasure the escapades with Sue in *Dead Beat.*
I certainly hope we will not have long to wait before the next book and the ending will not be quite so. . .abrupt.
Spoiler-
I am betting the hit was done by someone on the Black Council. I did think Kincaid for a slight instance but Kincaid would have known better then to take a chest shot. As horrible as this thought is, he would have gone for a head shot. Nick, I also thought that it might have something to do with Mab and the hit was to activate his service as Winter Knight, but that doesnt seem very Mab to me.
It is sad that we must wait…
I initially agreed with Diane. Now I see it like this: the book finished with Harry resting in his boat before Murphy appeared.
Th next scene is a VERY VERY VERY early preview on the next book. All in all He actually did us a Small Favor in including that scene (how many times we asked for anticipations and clues??) and it has come with an edge 🙂
He is literally the Mab’s Maker after all, how we could expect any less!
A very good book. But please let my guess be true that this is a masterful plan of his godmother to get him out of Mab’s influence zone. Or whatever / whoever else is needed to bring him back… btw, this is brilliant but SADISTIC!
Another thing that made me upset about the ending of this great novel is that just when it looks like that Dresden and Murphy are FINALLY going to have some sort of moment together…it gets shot down…literally this time. Its so unfair.
Remember that the compilation book coming in september will have have murphy’s point of view 45 mn after the end of changes.
