“Changes” is released today!
Unfortunately, it’s still not yet available for Kindle, but we hope Penguin and Amazon will resolve their differences before too long. We invite folks to share their thoughts on the forum, but please, confine your remarks to the “Spoilers” section, and always place clear warnings in the subject line when creating a new Changes-related thread. Remember that many of Jim’s fans don’t or can’t read the book the day it’s released, so please be cautious and courteous of your fellow posters.
If you haven’t gotten your copy yet, you can order it through the Jim-Butcher.com store!
And yes, there will be more books in the Dresden Files series. Jim has plans for at least 20 total!

Yeah I totally forgot about Fix! He even said in small favor that the Knights die usually from killing each other off, AND he would not and could not take Harry in a fake fight. I just want to know if there’s Something we’ve come across that can mimic a train or are we to take it literaly as he is having a “walk toward the light moment”? I’m really gonna miss Mouse especially if he’s gonna send him with Maggie. I just know that my soul can not wait a whole year for number 13. Karrins little 45min insight will prob have her coming back all excited and happy and then be broken and scared finding Harrys blood all over the water beetle
So I type this at my own peril… for those of you with a nook or a kindle – let me tell you what I did. I went out and bought the book on openning day… but never so much as cracked the spine since you can find the book on the web in all popular formats as a download. I HAD pre-ordered it as an ebook – but they cancelled my order. DO NOT DOWNLOAD IF YOU HAVE NOT BOUGHT THE BOOK. Thats stealing people – but since I forked over my money for a copy of the book I feel justified in reading it however I darn well please.
On a seperate note – Barnes & Noble would make a killing and sell a ton more nooks and books if when you bought a book from their site or in the store it came with a sticker or a code on the reciept to download the digital version for free to your B&N.com account. Microsoft does that with all their technical books now.
Yeah, I also finished it way too late at night (couldn’t put it down), sobbed my guts out and tried to sleep. Didn’t know it wasn’t the end of the series, so I’ve been in mourning all day. Now, like everyone else, I want it to be next year already. Amazing book!
Ditto on the wishes for a happy ending for Mister. He just can’t go street!
SHOCK AND AWE!!!!
I go through a wacky process that started with the second book, I read the whole series again just prior to the newest release. What that does is prime me for the newest edition of Harry… Well it primed me alright and Changes was like NITRO!
An echo to everyone else here, you are wickedly cruel, #13 is going to have a lot to live up to, and I can’t wait.
Close one plot line and add a hell of a way to open another!
I just finished the book and just let me say that Harry got me through school and you kill him you jerk!!! That was a low blow but since there is a new book I forgive you Maggie had better get the pentacle
It was Thomas! He was acting funny when he left and he knew where Harry would be…at HIS boat.
At the end of chapter 11, Harry also refers to the centipede as “It sounded almost like a freaking locomotive”.
Dave – Mab had told Harry she would forget the remaining favors if he become her Knight.
Any suggestions on who Harry’s grandma is??
I just read Changes – overall, an excellent work, with one huge exception, as others have mentioned. The last few lines leaving us with a cliffhanger ending nearly made me throw the book across the room. I *hate* it when authors do that, and while you beat up Harry regularly and kill off characters I’ve grown attached to, I wasn’t expecting you to stoop that low. It honestly has the opposite effect on me of the intent, and makes me less likely to pick up the next book, for fear of something like that being pulled again. I’ll probably get it, but only after letting a friend read it first & making sure there’s not that kind of cliffhanger lurking.
Noooooooooooooo!
OK now that I have got that out, I have a funny feeling that Lea is Harry’s grandmother. And I love how Changes is not just the title but how Jim is writing the stories. Man I feel like a little kid 10 minutes after opening his last Christmas present. One year is too damn long.
Spoiler…
I have the feeling the winter knight’s power can only change when the knight dies… hence harry being put in the situation by mab to take the power.. But there seems to be great expectation (or that’s what i feel) that harry’s hasn’t quite finished his… job?? So to make it feasable for harry to go on himself… and not as some lacky wouldn’t there have to be a way for him to have a loop hole out of his situation. Plus there seems to be a hell of a lot of investment into his future so i think harry’s day isn’t done yet.. (I’m kinda hoping this is true anyway) Best book for me by far.
I did think Lea as his grandmother also until I remembered the sexual appeal between the two and then the ICK-factor hit infinity. Lea and Susan did seem to hit it off while changing Harry’s outfits in the car. and now Lea has access to Susan, the Red Court in her is gone. HMMMMMM.
My first thought was: You rat bastard!!! Lay off the writing Godliness and have a nice, non cliffhanger ending for once!!!
Then i got thinking…
Odin gave harry something to eat…
And harry ate it thoughtfully…
and it was never really explained…
and gard said something about giving people a TASTE of renewed mortality…
I also find solace in the fact that Jim is writing this story in first person, So EVERYTHING in the books is a recollection! Harry survives!!!
Changes is by far the best novel of the Dresden Files. (Which is saying something: Proven Guilty and Small Favor are my comfort reading.) I didn’t know so many plot twists could fit in a book, from the first sentence to the last. It torture to put it down at the end of my lunch break or any time when work had to take precedent. (Wait for a weekend to read? Blasphemy!)
Come to think of it, I hope my neighbors don’t think I”m crazy after hearing all my reactions… Oh well. It was worth it.
As the book drew to a close, I thought, “This is amazing. I’ll be okay if it’s the last. At least the series won’t go downhill like SG-1.” Then came the last sentence. “That can’t be it!” I hissed to no one in particular. Maybe my dog. I fell asleep, battling between hoping there could be hope for Harry and considering a possible spin-off with Maggie. I’m glad to see this isn’t the last. And if Mr. Butcher’s trend of besting his books over and over continues…
Can you best Changes? Is that even possible?
*****SPOILER*****
Mr Butcher, my wife and I want to THANK YOU!!!! for your amazing books. Please don’t let this be the end of Harry. Every year your books make a GREAT wedding Anniversary gift. So if for no other reason than any of my fellow fans of Harry have sighted (dark offering, threats of physical violence, money, first born, etc.), please don’t take away my guarentee PERFECT anniversary gift. Pretty Please.
Also theories on the ending:
I think the shooting was to kill Harry and it might have came from… Malcom (with Red Court gone he may be the top of the Bad Guy list now)…the Black Council…a hit man hired by the Insurance Company..maybe all 3 BUT I KNOW HARRY IS NOT DEAD. PERIOD. Mab, Odin, Uriel, Darkhollow, Mouse (my wife wants a mouse), someone will bring Harry back (keep him alive?)
**spoilers?**
Well. I just cried, quite a lot. Then I cheered because the Murphy and Harry thing has been driving me up the wall AND THEN MY JAW HIT THE FLOOR AND I HAVE YET TO PICK IT UP.
OH SWEET LORD, CAPS LOCK CANNOT EXPRESS. CAN. NOT. EXPRESS.
I’m going to be spending every moment of everyday on the edge of my seat until I can get my hands on my next dose of Dresden, that I will undoubtedly devour in one day.
p.s come to Toronto please!! You need to be swarmed by your adoring Canadian fans!!!
I just have this to say: The ending is awesome.
Cant wait for the next book.
amazing story!!! can’t wait for the next book….
best one so far…from beginning to end….
WoW!!!!
To Jerry (who posted April 10, 2010 @ 02:59 PM):
Malcom? The only Malcom I remember from the series was Harry’s father, and he’s dead (and certainly wouldn’t be shooting his own son).
Meanwhile, to everyone else, thanks to the “magic” of Contract Law (Jim’s committed to 20 books I believe), plus the reassurance he’s provided on this website that this is not the end, I don’t feel so bad about discussing the “spoiler”.
As for how Harry survived? Remember that in Summer Knight Bob explains how difficult the title character (the late Mr. Reul) would be to kill:
“Regular folks could do it. But they wouldn’t be able to do it without burning buildings and smoking craters and so on.”
He also says it would be difficult for a wizard. So I find it hard to believe that a mere bullet (even a steel jacketed one) could do the deed.
Plus, I’m guessing the woman’s voice Harry hears at the “end” is Lash – and she should only be around if he’s still alive. (And I hope she is still around, and working for good, for good!)
Meanwhile, I’m glad the series is continuing, there are soooooo many loose ends to tie up. (I’m also betting that whoever pulled the trigger is either the same person, or from the same outfit, that tried to run Harry off the road in Proven Guilty, tried to blow him up in White Knight, and tried to shoot him in front of the FBI building in this book. What do they all have in common: mortal means only! Hmmmm – could that be a clue there’s a player in the game everyone’s overlooked?
***SPOILER***SPOILER***SPOILER***
you all know how in McAnally’s Pub, there is all the carving on the pillars depicting old world fairy tales and stuff and a bunch of other small little things of the course of the series kind of makes me think that Mac was once a knight for either summer or winter, cause it seems like every one knows him and his place is accorded neutral ground…
*** SPOILER***SPOILER***SPOILER***
all ‘n all on helluva book, i would never have pegged harry to commit genicide…. or would the EEBS have been effected by the curse since they are stuck in the nevernever with the Erlking? keep that in mind
I love this series with all my heart and I love all the twists. Jim Butcher keeps me hanging on and I cannot WAIT to read the next installment.
There’s very little I’ve been able to predict from Mr Butcher in all the books and that’s one of the things that keeps me coming back for more.
