Changes released!

“Changes” is released today!

Unfortunately, it’s still not yet available for Kindle, but we hope Penguin and Amazon will resolve their differences before too long. We invite folks to share their thoughts on the forum, but please, confine your remarks to the “Spoilers” section, and always place clear warnings in the subject line when creating a new Changes-related thread. Remember that many of Jim’s fans don’t or can’t read the book the day it’s released, so please be cautious and courteous of your fellow posters.
If you haven’t gotten your copy yet, you can order it through the Jim-Butcher.com store!
And yes, there will be more books in the Dresden Files series. Jim has plans for at least 20 total!

  1. Jim, you sick minded man. You are an INCREDIBLE author. I’ve loved ALL the Dresden books, but this one…WOW. I just Hope Harry isn’t dead dead. That would ruin the rest of the entire series for me, as well as, I think, a great many others.
    Either way, WELL DONE

  2. Wonderful possibilities in “Changes”-fantastic book. However, I don’t want to wait a year to find out where Mister has disappeared to. I hope Ivy or Injun Joe rescues him. In any case, please give us some information about Mister.

  3. I don’t see the series going in the direction of Harry actually being dead and the series continuing on as Maggie’s story. If the story jumped to where she was around 16 years old, maybe, but as a 9 or 10 year old? It wouldn’t be all that good of a story line. It would be about her coming into her powers, yes, buts that all. What else could you do? She might accidentally set fire to something, I can go with that and it would be funny. I will also go with that she could have some vamp characteristics because of what her mommy was but I would doubt that. I just really don’t see the story going that way.
And I completely agree that Mister must be found. More for the sake of keeping all other animals safe.

  4. I cannot express the sheer dumbfoundedness that i feel after reading Changes. Outstanding book, well written, brings some things to conclusion i was all happy for Harry and Murphey….and that damn brock wall slammed into me. My jaw dropped and i had to re read the ending like 3 times just to make sure i got it right. Well done Mr Butcher…well done. Now write faster because i dont think any of us are willing to wait a year before finding out what happens…..

  5. spoiler alert for you all, but according to Jim “Changes” was suppose to actually be book 10 of his twenty book Harry Dresden series, plus his apocalytic trilogy at the end, so there should be lots more books to come, he says that he has the rest roughly laid out. Also may want to see his book signing in Portland from april 8th, answers a couple of questions asked here.

  6. Yes, Mab could have ‘removed’ Harry so he would be off the real-world radar. I wonder how the transition is usually done.
Loved the scene with Mouse & Lea, too! Anyone have any ideas about the blue glow Mouse has now? He is referred to as a Demon, right?
Another idea about Harry’s grandma: remember how Mab initiates the Winter Knights (oo la la); perhaps McCoy was a Winter Knight long ago!

  7. Etaion – Thanks for the info. Merry Christmas to me.
I rules out anyone as Harry’s grandmother that he has been involved with or they attracted to him (Mab, Lea, Anastatia). ICK. Molly doesn’t know he might be related.
Stevie D may have decided to finish his contract out of “ethics”. Funny his name is Steven Douglas. The Steven Douglas monument on 35th south in Chicago near Lake Meadow Park (opening of book 4) is built on old “Camp Douglas”, the North’s answer to Andersonville. 4-6,000 incredibly pissed-off Confederate soldiers are buried there. Talk about potential for haunting.

  8. No one else seems to have posited this theory and maybe it doesn’t hold water . . . but I thought maybe the ending was a way to get Harry out of the position of being the Winter Knight. After Harry killed the old Winter Knight the power passed back to Mab and she endowed him with it. So Harry’s death would relieve him of the postion, right? Even if he were brought back to life, if he techically dies . . .
Mab would be so mad. It would be awesome.

  9. I hope I’m not the only one that thinks this but I hope that Harry getting shot and “dying” doesn’t get him out of being the Winter Knight. The power of the Winter Knight in a wizard, and the most powerful wizard of his generation at that, is staggering and incredibly cool. I hope that he keeps this gig for at least a little while.

  10. Harry is my favorite protagonist, out of the many billions of books I’ve read. Agree with previous posts, author is an evil genius! Dude we all love you but you have to write faster!

  11. Just finished & WOW! The ending left me breathless. Excellent book. When is 13 coming out?
When the movie is made, please don’t go with a name brand pretty boy. Get a new face that will stick around for lots of Dresden flicks.

  12. Well I don’t want to alarm anyone but give me another 2-3 years for me to get out of acting/directing film school and I’ll have or films going. I ve already written the first screenscript for Storm Front and working on Fool Moon. I’m contemplating trying to merge the first two maybe cuz Jim your not making it easy for me to do 20+ films. Which would then be what 20+ years of it! Which I don’t have a problem doing! Anyone and everyone can relate to any of the characters. I’ve promised myself that Harry will be a new face, and I’ll try to use as many new faces as I can.

  13. Very upset by the ending. I hope that the author will at least make a public statement as to whether or not Harry is still alive in the next book. If not, then I won’t bother reading it.
I read Changes in about 9 hours, and it was probably the best book I’ve ever read. The ending, however, just had me scratching my head and puzzled. To kill Harry like this is perhaps very eloquent, but I don’t like it one bit.

  14. Okay guys here is the thing I love all of Mr. Butchers Harry books, but if there is a movie Paul Blackthorne and only Paul should play Harry he did a wonderful job in the show and I could not watch it if it was not him………

  15. This was a hard book to put down. Just freaking wow. being a relatively new father myself, I was right there with Harry in his rage. I’m shocked by the ending but look forward to the next book. I know it takes time to write but i wish the next book was on it’s way to being done. Can’t wait for Side Jobs.

  16. You know this felt like a half-way point to me, not an ending… well done! and since Jim is not writing anymore codex of Alera books maybe he can finish the next one sooner, yes?

  17. Dear Jim,
I in essence ate your book the day I got it…and in order to express my opinion of the book I have to paraphrase one of my favorite lines here. You good sir. are a drug dealer to book lovers. However I will not shame you for this. Cannot wait for the next one. Please soothe my addiction soon.
    Sincerely,
    Colin

  18. Jim: Outstanding! I read the book in 4 hours, the day it was released, and then nearly went nuts trying to figure out who i could talk to about it! the writing was flawless, and the development, delightful. I especially enjoyed the return of the erlking, mac’s dialogue, and mouse …. oh mouse! Please sir, hurry up with the next novel, i was almost literally trembling when i realized i would have to wait another year for the next novel
    oh dead

  19. im sorry but yes Paul did an excellent job in the tv series but i dont think he’d do so well for 20 movies
I personally would love to play Kincaid the most

  20. Wow!! A great book. I to was upset of the thought of going 1 year before the book. SHAME ON YOU JIM. Its not nice with a clifhanger in a book series with releases once a year.
I hope you will release the next one soon… very soon.
But again I loved the ending.. Harry’s life is defined by missery :-), so we can’t have him to happy.
I think that the one that “killed” Harry is Kinkaid. I choose to belive that ony by ending Harrys life would Harry’s deal with MAB broken.
    Hurry Jim…
